******* If Hazel was a human, she would be captain of the cheerleading team! Despite her past, Hazel is happy all the time! She was abandoned at a hunting camp in north Louisiana in October but she hasn't let that slow her down. She was taken in by a local rescue and is now ready for her forever home up north. Hazel is around 2 years old and weighs 33lbs. She has adorable, scruffy, blonde hair and we think she is a Schnauzer mix of some sort. Hazel’s foster mom says, “Hazel is always so happy! She is such a sweet dog. She is so good with the other dogs and loves to play! She is a very quick learner! Very smart! House trained! She runs and runs with my 3 dogs and my sister’s when they come visit. I have 2 small dogs and 1 big one. My sister’s dogs are also large. Hazel is also cat friendly! We have 2 cats and she doesn't pay them any mind. She has not been around kids since I have had her. She is very, very sweet, but she is super energetic and jumps a lot. If you have kids, I would be prepared to supervise and work on her jumping around them. Hazel is crate trained; I feed all of my dogs in their kennels so from one end of the house, you can say "Food time, Want some food, etc." and she will run as fast as she can to her kennel. She also knows sit, down, shake, and roll over. We have a doggy door and she has never had any accidents in the house. I think Hazel would do best in a home with no small kids (because of her jumping), and another dog about her size to play with. She is great with small dogs, but I think it would be perfect if there was also a larger one that she could chase and play with. A large fenced in yard. Doggy door not necessary, but she loves it and it is so convenient. At least a couple hours of intense play every day.” Hazel photos: photos.app.goo.gl/jH5d8YntM9xnQiKC7 Hazel videos: youtu.be/X6e62r6uUwA youtu.be/EYzvPqW4Ipo Hazel is spayed, microchipped, current on vaccinations and monthly heartworm/flea prevention. Upon rescue, Hazel tested positive for heartworms but has breezed through treatment. She will be heartworm free and ready to travel to her forever home in March 2019. Don’t wait; email TheChiSocietygmail apply for this fun loving girl today! All of our dogs are spayed/ neutered before adoption. Adult dogs have had their core vaccines---parvo, distemper, bordatella, and rabies, All dogs are tested and are heartworm negative. In addition they have been de-wormed and kept on heartworm prevention and flea prevention while in foster care. Most dogs come with a micr-chip already implanted. Adoption fees range from 235.00- 275.00 depending on the dog. Many times the adoption fee does not even cover the cost of all of the vetting we have done for a dog. In addition, some of our dogs are fostered in the South and come up once adopted---There is an additional transport fee for these dogs. Please contact the person listed in the bio for more information on a particular dog. We are very careful in placing our dogs--and look for the best home for each dog--All of our dogs are fostered in private homes, with fosters who get to know the dogs and know the types of home that would be best for each dog. Thank you for considering a rescued pet and we look forward to helping you find a great dog match--

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
