ralian Cattle Dog) about a year old and weighs 35 pounds. She was left at a neighbor of one of our volunteers and the neighbor asked if FKR would take her. She was a little anxious to start but soon enjoyed getting pets. She has since become a wonderful cuddler and loves belly rubs. She loves playing with her two foster sisters and running with them in their fenced yard. She’s a pretty fast runner! They rough house and play quite a bit (her younger foster sister really likes to play and rough house!) so she gets along very well with other dogs. She likes playing with toys and if I can’t play with her, she tosses it around herself! She has a lot of energy but can be very calm and quiet. She needs someone or a family who is active. She is such a happy dog and enjoys all the attention she can get and is quite happy meeting new people. Each day she ventures out a little more and really loves exploring and learning new things. She wasn’t sure about the basement stairs for a few days but now goes up and down them with no problem. She caught on to going outside quickly and goes to the door when she wants out. We are working on barking or ringing the bells hanging on the doorknob to let me know. She is crate trained and sleeps well (all night) in her crate. She should have a fenced in backyard but she doesn’t seem to be a jumper so a 4-foot fence should be fine. Please research this breed before applying. Cattle Dogs are a herding breed and need to be kept busy. I have been spayed, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting me, please complete the adoption application located at .furrykidsrefuge/adoptadog and a dedicated volunteer will get back to you as soon as possible. Furry Kids' Refuge is in need of good quality dog and puppy food with meat as the first ingredient. You can drop off donations at our weekly adoption events at the Lee's Summit Petco (1860 NW Chipman Road, Lee's Summit, MO), Saturdays only from 11am to 2:00 p.m. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. Would you like to foster a Furry Kid? Furry Kids' Refuge will supply the food & vet care while you supply the basic house rules & love.......win-win for all!! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
