EXTREMELY SWEET BOY!!! DOG FRIENDLY! UPDATE 4/26/2020: HEY! YOU!!! PLEASE read my resume below and consider adopting me. I am extremely cute and lately when people look at me, I have been quietly standing and STOMPING my RIGHT FOOT for attention. That’s RIGHT. I look right at them with my sweet brown eyes and PUT MY FOOT DOWN because it is time that I left this shelter. I’m not an obnoxious barker so I don’t call out in a big way, but I VERY, VERY, VERY MUCH want to be someone’s beloved family member and I WILL TELL YOU THAT WHEN YOU MEET ME. I will politely SHAKE YOUR HAND when we meet too. Please at least consider becoming my HERO. I really am a very good boy. On 9/23/19 Denise wrote: Tipper, an unclaimed stray from Animal Control, arrived at the end of December 2018. He appears to be a Hound/Retriever mix, 2 years old and he weighs 54 pounds. He is a long-legged boy that wears a brownish red coat decorated with little white tips on his feet, tail, and nose. Tipper is a GREAT DOG—a very sweet boy who enjoys affection. He was quickly adopted when he came in and lived for a month with a very loving family. He loved everything about their home—especially the food, and his spot on their sofa. Before long, he started guarding those things and this behavior made his family and their young son nervous. The adults in his home were very dog smart (they knew how to work with resource guarding) but their young son didn’t, so they erred on the side of caution and returned Tipper. We are very glad that they did, because we now know he will do best in an ADULT family that understands how to reduce or stop the need to resource guard. This behavior is not uncommon and can be managed and helped with proper training. For the month he was living with this family, he was house trained, had good house manners, and did not destroy things inside their home. He is good with other dogs and we can test him with cats if you’d like us too. Tipper is a relatively calm dog, as far as shelter dogs go, and is very attentive to people who are interacting with him. He knows how to give paw and will watch intently at a treat waiting for you to tell him what to do. Tipper needs a loving, ADULT home with people who are willing to work with him and help him be the best he can be. The “trading up” method usually works very well with dogs that resource guard. If you are interested in adopting Tipper, one of our regular trainers has volunteered to help integrate him into your home. GOOD WITH DOGS. VOLUNTEERS and DONATIONS NEEDED. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
