for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi! My name is Kaley, and I'm a sweet, pretty little Belgian Malinois girl of only 55 pounds. I was surrendered to a local Hampton Roads shelter because my previous owner said I had dog aggression and didn't like little kids. I was a very scared girl when foster mom came to pick me up, but she scratched my silly sideways ears and told me everything was going to be just fine. After a few hours in her house, I became a happy, bouncy pup, but I still get nervous as soon as we leave our house or yard. She is working on helping me gain some confidence in the outside world since I am very undersocialized, whatever that means. I have a super handsome, big foster brother who's my bestie, and a grumpy foster sister that we just mutually tolerate each other. Foster mom says until I'm better socialized, I shouldn't live in a house with other female doggies. I'm a typical Mal, lots of energy, and I LOVE to play! I love wrestling with my foster brother, but not all dogs might be ready for my rough style of play. I also love fetching and especially love my rope tug toy! Foster mom and dad haven't been teaching me any tricks because they say I need to learn the basics of "house-dogness" first. I think it's super boring, but I quickly learned that they are boss lady and man so I'm trying to be good and listen. Foster mom says I'm a smart girl that will be lots of fun for someone to train. I'm house and crate trained and let you know quite loudly when I need to potty. Oh, I'm also not a fan of small critters...small dogs, cats, bunnies, ducks, reptiles, etc would not make good housemates for me. Small humans are also on my "not good housemate" list. Older/teenage kids would probably be fun to play with, but not the little ones. I have resource guarding issues with my foster brother and sis that have improved in just the 10 days I've been here, so my new people would have to continue showing me that sharing is a good thing. In that short time, I've become protective of my foster parents and their house, and don't take kindly to strangers coming in. With more socialization outside of my home, I might get better, but for right now, I only like my people coming in the door. If I sound like a good fit for you, please talk to the nice people at the rescue that got me out of the scary shelter! Make sure you have some Mal or working dog experience, because I can be a bit of a handful. Foster mom says handful, but I say I'm just endless loads of fun! If you are interested in meeting me, please let your adoption coordinator know. Or you can complete an application (if you’re in our territory of VA, NC or MD) at www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. Kaley is being fostered in Virginia Beach, VA. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
