For more photos please visit our Facebook page. .facebook/pages/Almost-Home-New-Mexico/203840136304815 Approximate DOB 03/01/2015 Size - About 60 lbs History- Taken to a small rural shelter as a puppy somehow she was skipped over time and time again-- no adopter took her home, no rescues picked her up, nothing. She grew up alone, in a shelter hiding under a dog bed. Then one day we started seeing posts on FB as the shelter staff and volunteers scrambled to try and get someone to notice her. Her time was up and she had been skipped way too many times. We said ok we would take her in- nobody had mentioned the extent of her fearfulness- so imagine the surprise when we got her home and she ran to the far corner of the property and would just bark at us. We would sit out there forever with her on the porch and then go inside and hang out on the couch. She grew very loving and is such a playful girl-- she absolutely loves toys!!! Her issue is it will take time to earn her trust- someone will have to be committed to keeping her on leash and having her with them all the time until she bonds. Temperament- Initially- Very standoffish, shy, and weary. Will stand at the far end of a yard and bark and bark. However, once she bonds she is a sweet goofy lovebug. She loves playing with toys and hanging out on the couch. She is such a different dog once she trusts and loves someone. Energy Level- Mid level energy - she loves to play with her friends. They wrestle (she is with Jacques, Piquin, and Caeser), play tug, play chase, and just have fun but she would really love to have her own person to love and cuddle with on the couch though. She is a toy hoarder so would love a family of her own that would buy her some toys. Dogs/Cats- Good with the other dogs, however she is a dominant dog so can be pushy. She would do best in a home with a male dog. Good with my cats here in the living room- I don't think she would be ok with cats outside running around though. Housetrained- House trained perfectly using a dog door. There have been no accidents at all. She is crate trained as well. This girl is so beautiful, fun, and athletic but does enjoy cuddling on the couch. She absolutely loves, loves, loves toys and will pile them all up together. She is too cute and puppy like with me and my daughters but very weary of strangers so will bark at them and keep her distance. She will make a wonderful companion for someone who wants a loving girl who just needs time to bond with her new person. We will be highly recommending keeping her on a long leash and having lots of treats for at least a week so she can bond otherwise she will go to the far end of the property and bark and not let you catch her. She comes to us but she knows us and has been with us since coming out of the shelter so she s great once she loves and trusts you- it is just that initial change that throws her for a loop. We are waiving Taffy's adoption fee. Taffy is spayed, has been given all age appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, microchipped, 3 yr rabies vacc, HW tested, collar and tags, training information, and all the support you need. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
