cularly special home! Cute as a button and sweet as pie at times, she has a lot of anxiety she needs help managing. She's a great dog who loves belly rubs and fetch. She is playful and talkative, and makes all sorts of goofy sounds to communicate! She loves giving kisses and snuggle in the mornings. Basil is on multiple behavioral medications to keep her calm and happy, but it's not quite enough. She is looking for a single person or couple who do not live in a busy apartment building with lots of background noises. She is happy to greet the occasional visitor though, and usually adjusts well to new dog walkers and guests! In fact she enjoys meeting new people and will do anything for a treat. She is intelligent and picks up new commands really quickly. However, Basil should be kept separate at all times from children. Her ideal home would be in a quiet neighborhood without too many other dogs that she will need to walk by. Basil needs a private, fully fenced in yard to make sure she can get enough exercise since she's very spirited! She is small, so she doesn't need to go jogging, just walks and yard time are the essentials. Basil is such a great dog, but needs someone who can be extra patient with her for the 20% of the time she is too anxious and acts out. Her adopter should be experienced with dogs and be able to notice and understand subtle dog body language. Basil has already been through several courses of treatment with UPenn Behavioral Vets, and will need to continue to work with them or another professional to keep adjusting her medications as needed. Basil's adoption fee will be covered by her current family to help her new family budget for all her future appointments and medications! Plus, her meds don't cost very much (only ~$20/month). Age: 1-2 years How I came to PAWS: Originally found stray, now being re-homed to a different environment Animal ID#: A39522600 Weight: ~12 pounds Mixed breed (It’s impossible to identify breed mix by sight alone, so for most dogs, their mix is only a guess. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
