is obedient and settles down nicely to hang out with her toys!. Coco has fantastic house manners and has learned how good it can be to have a nice soft dog bed. While she enjoys bounding around the yard leaping like a gazelle to meet her tiny friend -- a 10 pound doxie -- at the fence line, she absolutely LOVES to cuddle with her human and get belly rubs! She is initially shy in new situations or meeting new people, but when in a safe environment (e.g., in a home), she warms up quickly, and is so sweet. Coco will need patience in new situations and meeting new people on her terms, but she is so worth the extra effort. Coco will be best in a quiet adult home with moderate to low activity and would prefer to be the only pet receiving all of her human's attention. This extremely sweet and smart dog is eager to please and treat-responsive. Coco was turned into a rural North Carolina shelter when her owner could no longer care for her. She was too skinny and the shelter was very scary for this shy, sweet dog. PetConnect came to her rescue and brought her to the DC area to find her new home that will adore her furever. If you are looking for a very sweet companion who will LOVE you unconditionally, Coco may be the one for you! In the comfort of her foster home, she loves to hang out in her dog bed or the sofa! As a young dog, Coco will need some general training, and confidence building. Coco would be a great companion to curl up at your feet (or in your lap) on a warm spring evening. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and eager to find her humans to love! The adoption fee for Coco is $350, which includes routine vetting, vaccines, and spay/neuter. ***Please note that our first step is to fill out an application (it does not commit you in anyway but allows us to discuss with you if you and the dog are a good fit). In addition, an important step in approving adoption applicants is to complete a vet check. Vetting of current and past pets is very important to us, thus we will be speaking with the vet(s) listed on your application to ensure that your current and previous pet(s) are kept up to date on vaccines (including rabies ), spayed or neutered, maintained on appropriate monthly preventatives and examined annually by your vet.*** Complete an online application and contact Robin at kinstondogsverizon if you would like more information on Coco!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
