d already spayed German Shephard mix. I came here from LA, and so far I love my new place. When I first came to my foster’s house there were already two dogs and a cat there. I was a little bit scared of them and it took me a little bit to warm up. Especially to my new 3 month old puppy foster sister. At first she was a little too wild for my tastes so I would go in a different room and hide out on the bed because she wasn’t able to get me up there. As I started to get adjusted to her playfulness I also started wanting to play back. Now we are like two peas in a pod. We LOVE chasing each other around and annoying the kitty and older pup. My foster mom says be careful what you wish for! I am not super fond of my crate yet, so I will need some work. I tend to drool, a lot, when I have to go in there for too long. I am great though at going to the bathroom outside! I have not had any accidents in my foster house as of yet. My foster people are my absolute favorites. I love to cuddle them, and give them puppy kisses. I really love belly rubs too! I feel the happiest when I am close to my people. I love chewing on my toys, and pretty much everything else but I am so ready to make everyone happy so I will learn what are toys and what aren’t. I also love going on walks. My foster teenagers say I am not a crazy puller and listen really well when being called. I just love smelling all the smells in the local park! My foster dad has been working really hard on teaching me basic commands and so far I am pretty good at sit, come, no, and lay down. I can’t wait to meet my new family so I can show them what a good girl I am and how much I can love them! If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at .ruffstartrescue. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal. Once we receive your application, a placement coordinator will be in contact with you as soon as possible. Please check out our website, .ruffstartrescue for more details and additional pictures on any of our animals! All Ruff Start dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention (dogs) as well as heartworm tested (dogs). Ruff Start Rescue is a foster based rescue. Animals are located in homes throughout Minnesota. We do not have a facility where animals are kept. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
