;rsquo;d do best as the only dog in the home! Story: Cornelia was rescued from a shelter in North Carolina as a puppy. She was adopted out for a time, but has now been returned and is looking for a new home. Cornelia is a super sweetie that loves all people and kids. She’d do best as the only dog in the home. She knows just how to get comfortable up on the couch with her humans, and will love to join you on walks and trots around the neighborhood. Cornelia is just looking for someone to be her new best furend and we know that she will repay them with endless amounts of love and tail wags. As a young dog, Cornelia will need an adopter who is committed to setting her up for success by enrolling in obedience training and exercising her both mentally and physically. She will also need love, patience, and socialization in order to thrive! CORNELIA’S PERFECT MATCH: PERFECT FAMILY: Cornelia loves people and has lived with kids ages five to ten. While she enjoys meeting dogs her size and bigger, sometimes at home she needs her own space. As such, she'd do best as the only pet in the house. Cornelia will be a great companion for whichever family she ends up with. BEHAVIOR IN HOME: Cornelia is a sweet girl whose favorite thing to do is curl up next to you on the couch with her head in your lap. She has a quirky personality that makes us laugh all the time. While she's not above chewing a loose crayon or toy on the ground, she hasn't been destructive with any furniture or shoes in the home. Nylabones and rope toys are her favorite things to chew. So far, she knows "sit" and "place." She's very food motivated and will be a quick learner for someone who wants to teach her more commands. She goes in her crate willingly when asked, even though she prefers to be out around the people in her home. Cornelia is house-trained and will give you a very specific bark by the door to let you know if she needs to go out. PERFECT HOME/EXERCISE NEEDS: Cornelia prefers quieter neighborhoods to busier city ones since she can get scared by loud noises on walks. She seems happier with short walks throughout the day. She's improving on the leash and shows no aggression when seeing other dogs. A yard isn't necessary, although she enjoys running around and chasing after tennis balls whenever she gets the chance. If you think that Cornelia might be your perfect match, apply today!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
