by your side and get some lovin' whenever you're up for it. She rarely barks, but instead makes an occasional sound more like a cross between a happy piglet and a snore. She loves to roll around in the grass and occasionally run zoomies. She also wiggles her entire booty when she's excited. It is quite a sight! She is teaching her foster mom how to walk on a loose leash...99% of the time (unless there are squirrels nearby, then it's loose, say 60% of the time. A no-pull harness helps tremendously!) She is sweet with the neighborhood kiddos when she meets them on the sidewalk for walks. She loves doggie play groups and is quite tolerant of high-energy dogs. She was a bit timid when she first arrived in foster, but has come out of her shell quite a bit! Indoors, Stormie is a super chill gal. She knows "sit" and "lay down" and will wait until you "free" her to eat her dinner! She's more of a licker than a chewer and respects your boundaries. Are you a family who prefers pets not be on the furniture? Stormie totally gets it and she won't go where she's not allowed! She does fantastic baby-gated in the kitchen when her humans are out (especially with a good frozen layered kong), but she can also chill in a crate if need-be. This carefree, happy-go-lucky girl is ready to wiggle her way into your heart and your home If you're interested in adopting Stormie, please visit our website to learn about our adoption process and to fill out an application, www.gatewaypets.com/adopt-a-pet/pet-adoption-policies. All of our dogs and cats will be micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, and up-to-date on vaccinations at the time of adoption. For more photos of Stormie, follow us on Facebook Gateway Pet Guardians and Instagram @gatewaypets ... #gpgStormie. To view other adoptable pets from our shelter, please visit, www.gatewaypets.com/adopt-a-pet/adopt-a-pet-in-st-louis. Gateway Pet Guardians is proud to offer a variety of mixed breed dogs available for adoption. However, please keep in mind that we rarely know the genetic background of the animals we rescue and, as such, we cannot guarantee the exact breed combinations found within this dog. Further, because "pit bull terrier type dog" is not a breed we can list and because this dog has a blocky head and other characteristics that make the public perceive him/her as a pit bull, we are listing him/her as a pit bull mix. However, we do not know his/her actual genetic makeup. Just know that this dog is probably a variety of several different breeds that have combined to create one very amazing and unique animal.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
