Retriever mix pup. I am pretty smart, have lots of energy, house trained, love people and giving kisses. I play well with non alpha dogs my size. I love water and walks. I would love a home with an active family, middle aged couple or just recently active, calm, patient, retired couple that will continue my leash, obedience, socialization, potty training. Also I would require daily runs and walks. No children under 8 years of age! No apartments or cats. Hi there my name is Pidge or Pidgey. My foster mommy found me when I was 4 weeks old and when she picked me up she said, “come on Pidge lets go”. That was September 2016. I was severely dehydrated and a bit on the skinny side. See my mama is a stray and well she had a bunch of puppies and as we got bigger she was having a hard time keeping up with us and here in San Antonio it is really hot and dry. My foster mama took me to the vet and I got my first set of shots. Well, my immune system was not good at all and I broke out with ringworm all over the place. So back to the vet I went and they gave me some medicine to take. We got that under control, but my puppy shots had to be broken up at 1 at a time, so my immune system could catch up. I have 3 foster siblings. One is a big Doberman, she is older but she still plays with me. I wish I could jump onto the trampoline with her, but I haven’t figured that out yet. My other two foster siblings are Dachshunds they can be annoying. The female I get along with better, but the male…that is another story. He tries to act like he is the boss of everything and has picked a fight with me….problem is I like him until he acts like this. So, sometimes we have to have time outs. I hate this; I just know I am missing out on fun. Oh, my foster people….there are three kids. One is 13 and she takes me on walks, one is 6 and I love it when she lays her head on me like I am a pillow and she plays on her ipad, the 3 year old…. Oh My Gosh!!!! He throws water balloons…. That is my most favorite thing EVER!!!!! My foster mama says I set on them and thinks someone should teach me to hunt. She also compares my obsession with catching water balloons to a border collie catching a Frisbee. I also love water. Laying in a pool, playing in the rain, I even like to climb in the tub or shower when people are in there. I love treats and stuffed toys too. I am potty trained, I have accidents if I don’t get let out in time. I know how to sit, lay down and stay. I know a hand signal for sit and I am working on the down and stay ones too. I just get so excited I have a hard time focusing, unless there is a water balloon….that I have no trouble focusing on. This pet is located near San Antonio, Texas and we have many transports a month to the WA and Oregon. If interested in adopting Amelia , contact us at info@dogdiggityrescue.com

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
