ers make it possible for Dogs XL to save and care for homeless and abandoned dogs! To learn about fostering dogs like Virgil please contact us at .dogsxlrescue/volunteer/foster Name: Virgil Breed: Lab Mix Approximate Age: 8 weeks Approximate Weight: 10 pounds Currently Living at: Arriving 4/28/19 *Because this puppy's breed is somewhat unknown (mom was a yellow lab, but dad is a mystery) and because we can't guarantee their adult size or appearance, these puppies are only eligible to be adopted by home owners* Meet Virgil! Oh puppy! Virgil has spent the last 8 weeks with his sisters, brothers and his mom (a lovely yellow lab named Danke!). It was so much fun—playing all the time, learning to puppy pounce, trying solid foods just like mom, sleeping in a big pile together… But now he’s ready to make his first really big leap and find just the right family. What’s he into? Everything! He wants to try walks in the park! And learning to sit for snacks! And running through the grass! And snoozing in a spot of sunlight! It’s all just so new and exciting. Like all puppies, Virgil will need lots of love and patience. House training, crate training and socialization will pave the way for years and years of belly rubs, nose kisses and delightfully happy tail wags! Let’s get you and this puppy off and running to a new life together: Ask us about Virgil today! Virgil needs a foster or a loving forever home to lavish love and attention on him. Won't you open your heart and home to this precious pup? Like most puppies, Virgil will need to work on housetraining. Virgil will also need to go to obedience school to grow into a well-socialized dog! As these puppies are very young, they will need proper vetting within 3 days after adoption to start up a relationship with your vet, and to check on any concerns. The adoption fee for puppies less than 6 months old is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including age appropriate vaccinations and spay/neuter. Puppies under 4 months of age may go to adoptive homes before they are spayed/neutered. Adopters who choose to adopt a puppy that has not yet been spayed/neutered are subject to an additional deposit of $100 (refundable upon proof of spay/neuter.) Included in the adoption fee, the rescue will arrange spay/neuter by a partner vet at the adopter's convenience when the puppy is between 4-6 months of age. It is the responsibility of the adopter to bring the adopted puppy back to the rescue vet for spaying/neutering or to send verification from another vet that the puppy had been spayed/neutered. If you are interested in adopting, please fill out the application online at .dogsxlrescue/adopt/adoption-questionnaire Thank you for considering adoption and helping to save a life! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
