forever home and never end up back in the system. To that end, an application is required on all potential adopters. Our adoption fee varies by dog. We accept electronic funds via VENMO or Paypal, or cash only. Puppies too young to be spayed/neutered are available for Foster-to-Adopt only. A FTA contract is required. Heartworm+ (We pay for treatment) FOSTER-TO-ADOPT ONLY! This full grown boy was abandoned at the local shelter with heartworm disease. He gets along with other dogs, but is protective of his squeaky toy!! (he doesn't share) Heartworm disease is 100% preventable. A simple monthly chewy would have kept this dog healthy. You can even get your dog a 6 or 12 month prevention injection! Treatment for heartworm disease can be costly and dangerous. Pets undergoing heartworm treatment are required to maintain calm and sedate. As the worms die, they can adversely affect the dogs health. Care and caution must be taken while the dog is in treatment. We allow our dogs in HW Treatment to be fostered by their adoptive family. We maintain legal ownership of the dog to ensure the treatment is completed. (at our expense) We allow our adopter to take the dog home. Love him, bond with him and care for him throughout his treatment. 30 days after his last treatment, we finalize the adoption. You may submit your Adoption application for Banjo. If approved, you will be provided all the necessary information and medication to help him through this period. Dogs who recover from heartworm disease go on to live normal lives and make excellent family pets. Banjo needs a family who cares enough to make sure he gets to the other side of this this hateful disease. Is that you? As a foster-to-adopt, you would be required to get Banjo to our vet (Northwest Animal Hospital on 1960) for heart worm treatment (2 separate visits - the rescue pays for this). If this is a problem your application cannot be approved. You may apply to foster-to-adopt from us directly from our web site. Please visit .yorkierescuehouston/forms and submit your application. Upon review, a volunteer will contact you if there are questions. Please be as thorough as possible in the answering the questions. Missing phone numbers, invalid addresses, or other inaccurate data will cause your application to be denied without further processing. If approved, we will forward your application to the foster for review. If the foster feels like this is a ‘good fit’, they will contact you to schedule a 'Meet & Greet' Should be you approved to 'foster-to-adopt' (FTA), you will be asked to execute a Foster-to-adopt Contract and submit ½ of the adoption fee, the other half will be due at final adoption. We usually arrange our M&G at this PetSmart Donations are accepted via VENMO

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
