up, or just one other older, preferably a female. He can be shy at first, but given time he warms up and loves his people. He is house, crate and car trained. He loves car rides, jumps right in and out of the car. He has his favorite bed, doesn't let anyone else use it, and that comes with him. He's been around kids and just ignores them for the most part, but probably not good around children under 2! 10/14/15 I always like to update Snickers, this is him in his bed in his foster home. This is his favorite place to relax!! Sweet boy! 01/07/2015 Snickers is doing great in his foster home. He is not fond of the larger high-energy dog in the home, but does well with the other laid back dogs. He would love to be an only dog as he loves to be loved on and curl up in your lap once he trusts you. We do believe he was abused in the past as he is very wary at first where your touch him until he gets to know and trust you especially around his neck where it appears he had an imbedded collar or some trauma to his neck at some point. He now allows his foster mom to touch and love on him anywhere and give him kisses on the face. He does a happy dance when he's excited and has begun to play with toys when the other high energy dog is not around. He is house broke but will mark to let the other dog he doesn't care for to stay away. This has diminished greatly with correction and the help of "no mark" spray. We believe being an only dog or with very laid back dogs he will not do this. We believe that he may only be about 8 years old. He has had a hard life so it is not easy to tell. He is very laid back and would make someone a great low maintenance dog. He does not require to go outside often and will hold it if it rains. He does not like the cold or the rain. He will go out if instructed. Please give this poor boy a home. He will make someone a loving companion who is loving to him. 10/27/14 Snickers with Sarah!! He loves this young lady!! 07/06/14 Sue wanted to update Snickers pictures, he has came a long way since he first came to partners. He is a sweet boy who wants to hang out with the volunteers and staff. He is a quiet boy and minds his own business. He just needs someone to give him the love he deserves. Older dogs make great companions. Won't you give Snickers a second chance? 12/29/13: This is Snickers he came to Partners For Pets a very scared boy. He's doing much better now and attended adoptions today. He is a handsome guy but will take some patience from someone to understand. He can be very fearful at first. Snicker's adoption fee is $145.00. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm neg, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. If you are interested in adopting, go to www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an online application. Adoptions are held at the O'Fallon, IL PetSmart every Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm and at the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart every Sunday and the first Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm. We are also at Petco in Edwardsville Crossing on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from 11:30-3:30 pm. The cats are only at Glen Carbon. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
