a multitude of diagnostic tests at Kansas State Veterinary Hospital, it was confirmed that Dolly has Cushings disease to which she had not been treated in her former home. Today (1-12-15) we started the necessary medication (Trilostane) to help correct her symptoms. While we have incurred over $thousands$ in medical expenses thus far, Dolly will remain in the diagnostic level for several months that will require several more Blood Tests as well as ACTH stimulation Tests to determine any necessary adjustments to the dosage of her medication. Each future blood panel will be about $70 and each ACTH panel will be almost $200. She is also struggling with kidney and liver disease and getting her to eat has been a huge issue. Sheltie Shack Rescue has never turned away an old or sick dog due to their potential adoption status OR cost of medical care; however, in order to continue our efforts we soley depend on the generosity of donors to help cover these extreme expenses. If you can find a way to help support our Dolly's ongoing medical needs, to include her monthly medicine expense of approximately $100 we would be so very appreciative. Many SMALL donations can add up to help immensely, so do not feel like the $5-$10-$20 donations are not worthwhile or appreciated, THEY ARE and since we are a 501(c)3 charitable organization, your donations are also tax deductible. DOLLY CONTINUES TO BE AN ONGOING PATIENT AT KSU VET HOSPITAL AND WITH ONGOING MEDICAL NEEDS; THEREFORE, WE HAVE DECIDED SHE WILL REMAIN A MEMBER OF THE SHELTIE SHACK FUR-FAMILY AS OUR SENIOR SACTUARY QUEEN. THANK YOU from DOLLY and SSR ! ________________________________________________________________________ Meet the newest member of the Sheltie Shack Rescue Foster Family. Sadly, I'm certain that Dolly feels like the rug has been pulled out from under her again. Unable to be cared for any longer by her former owner (having only been adopted 3 years ago after being found as a stray and not reclaimed) she ends up looking for a forever home again. At 11+ years of age, Dolly has struggled with some obvious (hair loss) medical issues that have and will continue to be addressed. If after that time, a loving, quieter sanctuary home can be found for her....we all will be grateful, mostly sweet little Dolly. _____________________________________________________ BEFORE INQUIRING ABOUT ADOPTING ONE OF OUR AVAILABLE PETS or TAKING THE TIME TO FILL OUT OUR QUITE DETAILED APPLICATION, PLEASE REVIEW THE INFORMATION PROVIDED ON OUR ADOPTION INFO LINK TO ENSURE THAT YOU WILL MEET THE NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS TO ADOPT ONE OF OUR PETS. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
