John Wayne Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 1 year as of 01/2019 SEX: M Approximate Weight: 54 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs and kids! We don't know how JW is with cats, but we can test for it if interested! Currently Living at: DC area foster home I’m Looking For: A family who will love me forever. I thought I had found that when I was adopted as young chap, but sometimes things in life change - so here I am! Back for a new lease on life! I think living with an active family would be so cool...long walks, hikes, doggie play dates and adventures at the dog park. Wow! Say no more! I really want to prove to you that I can be a good boy but I might need some extra help with some obedience training and lots of patience. It's tough being a young guy with this much energy. I'm just always so jazzed to give lots of love!! What My Foster Says About Me: "This guy is a snuggle pro and wants nothing more than to keep you nice and toasty on the sofa after a day of play. Every night, he’s snuggled up and crashed out right on top of someone’s lap for a snooze and some ear scratches. After a bit of an adjustment to house-living and figuring out who’s in charge with our resident dog Winston, he has really come out of his shell and shown us some serious love! He plays politely and with lots of enthusiasm - he’s very proud of his power toy chewing abilities (“watch how fast I can de-fluff this stuffy, guys!”) and he’s sure he’ll catch his tail, eventually... he is so gentle and loving toward our 4-year old, he’s doing well learning her limits (he does have a thing for sneakily taking off with stuffed animals) and is so, so sweet with her. He’s a responsive boy who does really well with lots of praise and positive reinforcement. He didn’t like the crate at all the first night, but the second night he settled down well and slept through the night with no complaints. We thought he’d be a bit frazzled on a leash, but his walk manners are pretty decent, some consistent training and practice and he’s sure to be a pro. He’s a big fan of stinky treats, toys, and sitting riiiiight next to his people (right under legs and feet is best, of course)." Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any particular dog is housebroken. All our dogs are working on crate training. TO ADOPT: Download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Lia at liapluckydoganimalrescue . The adoption fee for John Wayne is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. That said, we cannot make any guarantees about age, breed or temperament. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
