SSIE NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Nessie Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 1 year as of October 2023 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 40 lbs Gets Along With: Nessie does well with other dogs and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog. We haven't seen her with cats but she can be tested. Due to her shyness, she may not go to a home with children under the age of 12. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special Adoption Considerations: Nessie is shy and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog to show her the ropes. Because of her shy personality, we do not recommend her for a home with children under the age of 12. Nessie is Looking For: This sweet mama was just about a year old when she gave birth to her five puppies. She did a great job - such a good momma - and they went off to find their forever homes. Now Nessie is ready to get her own humans! About Nessie: Nessie's story began with shyness, but oh, how she has blossomed! With love and care, Nessie has gained the confidence to embrace walks and adventures. From a timid arrival to a pup ready for the world, Nessie's transformation is a testament to her resilience. Lovebug Alert Nessie isn't just a dog; she's a certified lovebug! Her short tail becomes a rapid metronome of excitement when she's thrilled. If you're in need of some serious cuddle therapy, Nessie is your go-to companion. Picture yourself on the couch with Nessie snuggled up next to you, reveling in head scratches and sharing cozy moments. Mellow Girl Around the house, Nessie is chill and mellow. She enjoys sitting and observing her surroundings, soaking in the serenity. When it's independent playtime, she's content to chew on a favorite toy, showcasing her ability to find joy in solo activities. Playful Pup Nessie's social side shines when it's playtime. She loves to chase, tug, and wrestle with other dogs, making her the life of any doggy playdate. Her playful spirit is contagious, and she's always up for a good time with her furry friends. Food Motivated Nessie is a culinary enthusiast! Whether it's kibble, treats, or a gourmet meal, she's all in. Currently on the journey of learning basic commands, Nessie's love for food makes training sessions both enjoyable and rewarding. Still Building Her Braves Despite her progress, Nessie still carries a bit of anxiety and requires a patient and encouraging environment to reach her full potential. With love and understanding, she promises to be a loyal and loving addition to a home willing to nurture her journey. Are you ready to open your heart to Nessie's loving and playful spirit? If you're seeking a furry friend who excels in both calm companionship and spirited play, Nessie is the perfect match. Are you ready to welcome Nessie into your heart and home? What My Foster Says About Me: Nessie is a super sweet pup! She came to me very shy, but she’s gained a lot of confidence! She has the cutest tiny tail that wags rapidly when she’s happy, like when I greet her after coming home from work. Nessie loves to cuddle with me on the couch and receive pets and head scratches. She is calm around the house and likes to sit and observe, or chew a toy independently. She also likes to chase, tug, and wrestle with other dogs. Nessie likes food and treats of all kinds and she knows her “sit” command well. At first she was reluctant to go out on walks, but now she enjoys walking around the neighborhood and taking in the new sights and sounds. She goes into her crate easily when I toss a treat in there, and relaxes with no issues. Nessie is just a little lovebug who deserves a kind, patient human to call her own! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
