FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Pincho Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of January 2024 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 36.5 lbs Gets Along With: Pincho does well with other dogs! She has done well with the children she has met; however, she has not lived with them to our knowledge. Since she is shy, she would do best in a home with children over the age of 12. We have also tested her with cats at the shelter and she simply ignored them. That is a good indicator she could do well with cats; however, she has not lived with them to our knowledge. We will be happy to discuss with you how to add a new pup to your pack if you have cats! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. Because Pincho is shy, she needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog. Due to her shy personality, we do not recommend her for a home with children under the age of 12. Pincho is Looking For: Her forever home! This sweetie was rescued in Puerto Rico and she's eager to start her new chapter in the DC area. Getting her own humans for long sniffy walks, romps in the park, and all the adventures they can dream up - yes, please! Exploring all the toys to see what she likes best! Quality kibble and a cushy dog bed! Most of all, however, she wants to know she's safe and loved and under her own roof for all her days. In exchange, she promises adoring gazes, happy tail wags, and loyal companionship. What do you say? Is Pincho the companion you can see trotting by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: "Pincho is an absolute gem! She is the sweetest, most gentle and loving girl. She is a mature and relaxed dog.Likes naps and kisses. Pincho is sweet and gentle with our whole family. She is doing well walking on leash without pulling. She is also quickly learning to relieve herself outside with positive reinforcement and has had very few accidents. Pincho is also easy going with other dogs when we are out on walks. She has also been fine with our dog at home." Foster update 2/26: "Pincho is a wonderful dog. She is a loving, sweet girl who often approaches for a pet or snuggle. We have fostered Pincho for the past 6 weeks and she has blended well in our home. While she was at first shy, she built her confidence quickly. She plays well with our other dog and our foster dog. She also loves lying by your side as you work or sit on the couch. She has a nice balanced energy. She is wonderful on the leash and does not pull. She loves her time outside and would be thrilled to go on hikes or long walks with her new family. Pincho is also a smarty pants! She loves playing tug of war and has quickly figured out that if you return the ball it gets tossed right back to you! She is mature and trustworthy in our home. She sleeps in a dog bed next to us and happily falls asleep on the warm cushion. She was easily house trained and we have had no accidents in the past month. Pincho barks very little, occasionally at a squirrel or deer, but not much. Overall, she is such an amazing dog! Being a shy girl, she does better when building confidence in a home or neighborhood. Please give this beautiful girl a chance, she will reward you with full time loyalty and love!" Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
