g her. They were putting her in a crate for long hours, and not feeding her until 10 or 11 pm, so while losing her family is sad, we know that Carly is headed for a much better life. Thankfully, a good Samaritan who knew the family took stepped up to take her in and kept her safe until a foster home was available. Carly is now being fostered with several other small dogs and two cats, and her foster mom reports she's doing well with her new pack. The first day she arrived, she was timid and barked at unfamiliar noises, but that's already calming down. Still, she may not be ideal for a condo. Carly has a more mellow energy level and is a sweet, friendly pup once she's given a few days to settle in. She sleeps calmly through the night in a dog bed in her foster mom's bedroom, and shares well with the other dogs in the home, with no food or toy guarding issues. Her foster mom, Linda, thinks she will be fine as an only dog or with other calm dogs, and would love a fenced yard to romp in. Carly loves being outside, and will stay out for as long as Linda will let her. She's nervous when new people visit and nipped at Linda's adult son's food when he first met her. But, after one meeting, she now jumps on the couch next to him as soon as he sits down, and pushes her head under his hand to be petted. Linda shares that Carly has excellent house manners and she already trusts her to roam the house freely with her other pups when she's away. She walks OK on leash but currently gets most of her exercise in Linda's backyard, and is used to a calm, more rural setting. A home with older kids who know how to respect a little dog's space would be a great fit, or she'll make an excellent companion for a retired couple or single owner looking for a loving, loyal companion. FOSTER UPDATE - 10/11/19 "Carly's sassy little personality is really coming out, and I think a bit of info about how she’s coming out of her shell could help fit her into the perfect home! She gets along fine with our dogs (all 35 lbs or less). She was not a fan of our friend's active dog when she came to visit because she was very energetic and wanted to play with Carly immediately and all the time. Carly would probably do best with another calm dog in the house, but she does REALLY LOVE her individual attention, so if she was a singleton that would be fine with her I’m sure! She has the cutest sounds ON THE PLANET EARTH!!!! She snorts when she walks and the instant she falls asleep, she begins making a very soothing and quiet snoring sound. It’s adorable. She LOVES walks, and it’s clear she wasn’t well leash trained because she pulls like her life depends on it. She loves walks sooooo much though, whoever adopts her will need to help work on her leash walking skills. She’s tiny though so it’s not like she’ll pull ya far. Carly loves snuggles and is the perfect lap pup. She isn’t the biggest fan of all the city sounds (she’s a bit of a barker), but I think she will adjust with time. She has a very cute and not shrill bark. She is still a bit picky with food... you have to present her with it multiple times before she’s interested. We’re working with her, but figured it was worth saying." Apply today! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
