d off an abandoned property where he was left in a 10x20 kennel with two other dogs after the renters left and left 8 dogs behind. Thankfully the property owners found them before they had been there too long since there was no food in the kennel and they could not get out. Potter was rescued with a nasty case of heartworms but has since been treated for them. All the dogs that were rescued from the same property tested positive for them other than a young pup. Aside from the heartworm, Potter is a healthy little dude and so full of life. He loves to take naps all snuggled up with his foster mom and also enjoys spending time outside in their fenced in yard. Potter is looking for a home where there is a fence because he is not as used to being on a leash and still needs work on learning how to leash walk like a proper boy. He currently lives with other dogs and does great with all of them. He is the kind of dog who can take them or leave them though. He likes having them around but play is definitely not his prerogative. He is also living with cats in his foster home and does well with them. He needs a companion who will keep him company though, whether it is another dog or a cat who wants to spend time with him too. Potter would prefer a home without small children only because they can be loud and unpredictable which makes him nervous. Potter is crate trained and used to staying in his crate whenever his foster parents are not home. He loves having a cushy bed in there and when he was first introduced to his you could see the joy in his face of not having to sleep on the hard ground anymore. Potter can still be a little nervous with people so he needs a family who will be very patient with him as he learns that the world isn't so scary to be a part of. He will sometimes submissive tinkle when he gets worried. He also is slowly learning how to come when called. Watching the other dogs in his foster home has helped with this some. Potter's adoption fee is $275 which includes his neuter, microchip and registration, deworming, age appropriate vaccinations, heartworm treatment, and being started on heartworm and flea/tick preventions. If you have specific questions about him please email his foster mom at fchsjess@gmail.com and she will tell you more about him. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
