ghing around 20 pounds who loves everyone she meets. She will be soon traveling to NJ to find a new life with a loving family. This is Emiley's amazing & heartbreaking story as told by her foster mom: I found this little baby girl living off of butcher counter scraps behind our HEB. She was covered in mange and had bad road rash from either being dumped or attacked by other dogs... it was honestly hard to tell. There were people throwing scraps of food at her but she wasn't interested, she only wanted some attention. By the time I had packed up my groceries, she was waiting at the front door of my car. I brought her home with me, gave her the most intense flea bath, a full belly, and a warm place to sleep. The next day I called all the shelters to try and get her in. I pleaded, I offered to financially back her, I tried everything but unfortunately, the shelters here are so overwhelmed they couldn't take her. I was forced to take her to Animal Control. I was crushed. When I got there, it got worse. Not only had she been dumped, but she had been dumped by the family who adopted her 6 weeks earlier. At this point, I was a mess. What is wrong with people?! Animal Control gave the people a week to pick her up and after that week, she would be at risk of euthanasia. I literally could not shake that thought. To make matters worse, Trey and I were traveling for 10 days starting the date she was at risk. I called the shelters over and over, I called vet after vet, all without success. I was just about to give up hope when a group called 11th Hour Rescue offered to tag her for rescue if I could find a place for her to go until we could figure out transport to NJ. Once again, I was desperate but determined. Then I found Everhart Animal Hospital. They offered to not only take her on as a rescue client, house her, but to also spring her from animal control, since I was in FL. Today I got to pick her up! It was a pretty great moment. It's taken an army of amazing strangers I've never met to save her but I am grateful for every single one!! To see how happy she is, is truly a wonderful feeling. She still has to find her forever home, but for now she's off to a better start. To meet Emiley please fill out an application at ehrdogs.org and be sure to mention her name, EMILEY TEXAS!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
