ire@sbcglobal.net for more info and an application. Video: https://www.facebook.com/betty.koufosconway/videos/1145368205556673 Our little darling is Holly. She is a best buddy to Patches. While not found with Patches or kenneled in the shelter with him they have developed quite a beautiful friendship. Holly is Patches' "seeing eyedog!" Video: https://www.facebook.com/betty.koufosconway/posts/1145384285555065 If interested in Holly email Linda at LBredfire@sbcglobal.net ------- This is a special request for two little dogs who have grown to love and depend on one another. Please read their stories. We know there is a special home together for them... Both were abandoned by their owners and left on the streets to die. Patches was severely neglected and Holly appears to have been abused. Patches' hair was so long he couldn't walk, he was found emaciated, covered in stickers, burrs, dirt clods and even maggots. With his eyes completely covered, he lost an eye. The eye socket even had stickers in it. Although doctors could find nothing wrong with his intact eye, he is unable to see. Last year Holly and Patches received a Christmas gift beyond their dreams; to have a home and one filled with love. A day after Christmas both dogs were both flown from Fresno to Napa to their new (Foster) home. When Holly got off the plane, she was so frightened she was covered in feces, urine, vomit and didn't stop shaking and whimpering for several days. Nor could she eat or drink. She was afraid of everyone. At night she would run through the house crying. In order to help her and Patches in their new environment, they slept together in a crate. Holly stopped crying and Patches didn't feel so alone in his dark world. Patches had to adjust living in a house. He had to learn not to pee in the house and to use a doggy door. Fortunately, since Holly was his companion, he would follow her everywhere and he learned to potty outside. Over time, the two learned it was okay to play, too. The two became best buddies, helping each other adjust to their new world. A world filled with love. Both dogs love being near their Foster mama and get along well with three of their Foster dog sisters. However, they think cats are for chasing. Although, both are loving and faithful companions, Holly is still frightened of children and some men. Therefore, she can only be placed in a home without children and cats. Ideally, Holly and Patches will find a home where they can stay together. They will flourish in an environment with lots of love, patience, and redirection when needed. They are both inside dogs and sleep well in a crate. In fact, Holly knows when it's bedtime and when she runs to bed Patches follows. They are very, very special and are looking for a very special forever home together. Holly is Poodle/terrier and Patches is a Shih Tzu/Llaso Apso. They both require regular grooming. Please email Linda at lbredfire@sbcglobal.net about meeting these two. This dog comes spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, heartworm tested negative, and more with an adoption fee/donation to Whiskers, Tails and Ferals in Napa, CA. See more information at http://whiskerstailsandferals.org/. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
