n. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. While we like to know what you like in looks, a dog is more than a pretty face. If so please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and complete the application. You'll find it in the menu on the left hand side. You'll also find a total listing of all our dogs available. Just browsing but interested in poodles and poodle mixes? Please drop a note to applications@carolinapoodlerescue.org with your name, address and phone # and email. We'll add you to our mailing list. thanks the CPR Adoption team Date into Rescue: 3/7/16 Reason for being in rescue: owner surrender Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? yes, Walker has tested positive for heartworms. When adopted, Walker will be sent home with a one year supply of heartworm preventative. Weight: est 12 lbs Height: est 12" at the shoulder Adoption fee: $229 Fence needed? no What kind of home would be best for me? Walker would thrive best in a home with an experienced owner that can continue to work and train with him on his socialization skills. Walker would greatly benefit from an adopter that will continue to expose him to new experiences and positive interactions with the world. What is my personality like? Walker was a strange bird when he first came to us here at CPR. He was very tense and jumpy and sometimes hard to get a read on. However, Walker has since made many strides since his first days with us. At first, he was rotated outside by himself, but now he lives in a cottage with about fifteen other dogs. He seems much more comfortable with human touch and all of our caregivers are able to handle and pick him up. The biggest issue with Walker is that if he doesn't want to do something and you try to make him he is going to throw a temper tantrum, which now mainly seems to be grooming. He does not like to be groomed and is currently sedation groomed. However, we feel once he is in a home with one person that person could train with him and desensitize him to the process of grooming. Walker is a very energetic boy and can go all day. He loves to run, jump, and play outside. He also likes to play with toys and tennis balls. Walker gets along well with most dogs, but his high energy level irritates some dogs. Care giver update 2/16/2017: Walker is a cute little fellow and has an adorable smile. He pulled a little on the leash at first and wasn't used to wearing a collar, but soon adjusted and did just fine. He was okay with the admin dogs until he got a little pesky with Bo. He can be an annoyance to other dogs, barking in their faces, so I think he'd do best in a home where he's the only dog. How I act when I first meet new people: Walker is a little shy with new people, but comes around quickly. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: 5 years Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc. Others here may be a better fit for you. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet. We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
