ptable dogs this Sunday (June 17th) from 12-2 pm at the Bailey's Crossroads Petco (5825 Leesburg Pike, Baileys Crossroads, VA)!!!!!! ALBERT NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Albert Best Guess for Breed: Poodle Mix Best Guess for Age: 1-1.5 years as of 6/2018 SEX: male Approximate Weight: 40 lbs Has Lived With: dogs Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Very high energy breed - will benefit from adequate exercise and formal obedience training! Came to the shelter very matted and will likely need further grooming. Because of Albert's personality, he will need to go to a home that already has a resident, confident dog to show him the ropes! Meet Albert! Albert is a distinguished 1-1.5 year old poodle mix weighing in at 40 lbs who cannot WAIT to meet you! While Albert is out of the crazy puppy stages he is still a young energetic guy who will require PLENTY of exercise and cannot wait to grow and learn with you in DC! He unforunately was surrended with his brother and now they are both dreaming of long walks and trips to the dog park in their future. He'd love to play with new toys, explore the neighborhood and even go to obedience classes to show off just how smart he is! He is counting down the minutes until he can meet your friends, go on trips, and cuddle up with you on the couch after a long day. Albert is good with other dogs so he'd be a great addition to an existing pack or happy to soak up all the attention as an only dog. We haven't had a chance to see him interact with kids or cats yet, but if you have them let us know and we're happy to find out for you. Like most shelter dogs, Albert may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Ashley at ashleyr@luckydoganimalrescue.org! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
