Read on to learn about me, including my likes and dislikes. I love playing "find it" with toys and treats – especially the interactive kind like Kongs – but long walks are what I look forward to most. That’s why my foster mom and I walk for 2-3 miles several times a week. I wear two leashes on our extended walks to manage my leash reactivity around fellow dogs – but I’m working on it! When it comes down to it, activity and exercise are the keys to my happiness, and help me stay balanced. I am a very polite house dog once I establish a routine; it didn’t take long for me to adjust to my current foster mom’s schedule. I am kenneled during the day and sleep in her bed at night. I love snuggling in blankets or on the sofa, and enjoy taking part in day-to-day activities with my people – so if you need me, I’ll be there. If food is involved, I’ll definitely be there! You might even get a high five from me if there are treats involved – especially cheese. I LOVE cheese. Ready for the magic words? I am 100% house trained. I’ll even ring a bell to let you know. My repertoire of commands includes Sit, Down, Shake, Kennel, and Outside. I am ready to alert you with a bark or grumble if I spot a visitor at the door or a squirrel in the yard. You can count on me to tag along no matter the task – but, at times, I can be cautious around strangers. I’m not a fan of being picked up by someone new and will walk away if I’m not ready. The good news is, your patience and respect for my need for personal space will help me gain confidence and trust in these situations. But no matter what, I’m always up for snuggling on the couch! A busy house is not my thing; I rely on my people to protect me from commotion and unexpected situations. I have some situational anxiety (generally toward men) that I manage with prescription medication. The way I see it, a little extra help goes a long way! My ideal fur-ever home is one with an experienced pack leader and without small children. In a perfect world, it even has a backyard (with squirrels) to explore. Don’t fall in love with me because I’m just so adorable; I need someone who is committed to managing my sensitivities, creating opportunities to help me gain confidence, and sharing their endless supply of cheese. (Everyone has that, right?) If you’re ready to help me be the best dog I can be, I’m yours! ADOPTION EVENTS: Adoption events are updated as the foster home RSVP's to attend. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. You may wish to consider applying and setting up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/ Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN. All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets. All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet. All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal. YOU CAN HELP: Not able to foster or adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring an Underdog. Your donation will help us buy dog food and pay for medical costs. Visit this link www.underdogrescuemn.com/donate to donate. (Please note: A Paypal account is not necessary to use Paypal. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
