photo of me? Yikes, don’t I look a little furreaky? I chuckle at that photo now, ‘cause it was taken when I was having a really bad hair day, not the least of a bad life up until that point. I was picked up roaming the streets of San Antonio and taken to “the pound”. I was a mess. Bad hair, bad teeth, broken jaw that had healed a little crooked, but I can still eat everything cause I love to eat! I even had holes in my head…literally from my mouth to my sinus cavities cause some teeth had fallen out. I should have had lots of infections and stuff but nope, tuff as nails. None of those heart worm things either. I don’t have a chip on my shoulder even after being given a bad rap. But I do a little soft spot on my shoulder that the vet says is nothing to be concerned about and I can prance around with a spritely step at 9 years old. My eyes look a little cloudy. The Vet says I have cataracts forming but I see just fine to follow you around. If I wake up from a snooze fest and can’t find you, I will come looking for you and I will find you. Lucky for me my Foster Mom has lots of doggie beds in every room for me to get my cutie sleep! It’s always #TongueOutTuesday in my world, my adorable little tongue peeks on the right side of my mouth. It is supposed to convey that I am thinking deep thoughts, but really it just gets that way because I don’t have teeth to hold it in! But hey, I am a well seasoned traveler and now am looking to settle down and be waited on for the rest of my days. I figure I am only middle aged, but the “open road” has taken its toll on my body and I need a comfy place to lay my head down. I am open to offurs. I won’t take up much room cause despite my ability to eat/gum everything you give me, I only weigh a whopping 8 pounds. if you have a little spot in your heart and your house for me, please email Adoptions@Godsdogsrescue.org and tell them you are READY for ME! GOD'S DOGS Rescue, in San Antonio TX, does not have a shelter - ALL of our dogs are raised in foster homes in the San Antonio area. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
