ot be cared for properly. She was unable to keep him because of family issues. He is 10 years old, housebroken, is being brought up to date on Rabies, DHLLP, Bordetella, heart worm, fecal and blood tests. He has been diagnosed as diabetic and receives insulin injections twice daily. He has now been neutered and his teeth cleaned. He also has cataracts forming on both eyes that will be addressed once all other issues are taken care of. Peanut was seen in the ER on May 30th. He was having seizures. This was a result of the blood sugar levels crashing. He was kept overnight then transferred to the regular vet and stayed there until Friday. ON Friday he was taken to the MSU Veterinary clinic for a consultation about his diabetes. On Wednesday, June 6th he was discharged from MSU. He is now on a different food, insulin and testing. While at MSU they were able to minimize the blood sugar crashes with the new regimen. He sees the specialist at the Animal Surgery Center in Flint every 3 weeks. His blood sugar is monitored each day and reviewed by the specialist by telephone weekly at which time his insulin dosage is adjusted. He has begun to gain weight and his ribs and spine are hardly visible any more. His cataract surgery has been delayed until January in hopes that his blood sugar will be under control at that point. He is a lovable boy that enjoys being with you all the time. Everyone who has had contact with him always says he is such a sweet boy and he never should have been neglected the way he was, he didn't deserve it. Peanut's glucose curve has improved and his weight is significantly increased to a point where he was been given the ok to have his Cataracts removed. Peanut underwent successful Cataract surgery on January 22nd. He will have 4 different eye drops administered 4 times daily in addition to 2 oral medications. He will be wearing the cone of shame until he sees the Ophthalmologist in a week. Because of the size of the Cataracts it may take a little longer for him to regain 100% of his sight. His last Glucose curve showed his blood sugar is still not under control. The insulin has been changed to attempt to better control his blood sugar levels. He will be seen every two weeks to adjust the Insulin dosage until such time as his blood sugar levels are on an acceptable level. Peanut had his insulin changed again on 6/4/19. He is doing what is called roller coasting which is where the blood sugar levels dramatically spike and dramatically plummet. The new insulin will prevent this. He will be seen again in a week for another all day stay where the blood sugar in monitored throughout the day. The new insulin has a significant cost nearly $400 a vial Anyone interested in adopting Peanut once he has been released from Medical Hold must be willing to give him insulin shots twice daily, have follow up appointments with his Internal Medicine doctor and his Ophthalmologist. 8/28/2019 Peanut spent the last 24 hours at the Animal Surgical Center having his Glucose curve. He is doing better but he is now being placed on a short acting insulin in addition to his long acting insulin. The doctor expects that this will better regulate his sugar. He will be seen again on September 23rd for another 24 hour curve to see how it is working. If you would like to assist with Peanut's medical bills which are now approaching $15,000, all donations are appreciated. If you are interested in adopting Peanut or any of the dogs currently residing with Pug Luv go to michiganpugrescue download the Adoption/Foster Application under the Adopt/Foster tab on the left side of the home page. Print out the application, complete it and mail it in. This is what is required to begin the adoption process.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
