win people over with her charming personality and love of cuddles. When she isn't comfy in someone's lap, she is racing around with her sister and will never turn down some wrestle time. Poppy weighs about 15lbs and will likely be around 40-50lbs when fully grown. Poppy was surrendered to us with her 7 siblings after the previous family had an unintentional litter of puppies and needed help finding the puppies good homes. Poppy's mom is an Australian cattle dog and her dad is a pug. Poppy has been in a foster home with her sister Lilac, but she is looking for a forever home of her own. Poppy is a curious girl who has a busy little mind and body. She is looking for an active home that can keep up with her energy and dedicate the time to continue her training and socialization. Poppy is a smart, food-motivated girl and has already learned her name, and how to sit and come when called. Poppy has done great with the other small dogs in her foster home and could be a great little sister to another playful dog. She can be shy with larger dogs but could do well with a slow introduction. She also could do well as an only dog as long as she has lots of doggie friends. We haven't seen Poppy around cats, but she may do well with dog-savvy cats with a slow introduction and proper supervision. Poppy could be a wonderful addition to a family with kids 7 years and older. Poppy is still working on her housetraining but has been making great progress. Her new family will need to be patient with her while she is learning and expect accidents. She has been doing well with her crate training and will sleep through the night in her crate. She has always been with her sister, so she will need some time to adjust to being on her own and needs a family with a schedule that will allow Poppy to slowly be acclimated to being home alone. Poppy is such a lovely girl and is going to make the best new addition to a family. If you think that family might just be you, submit an adoption application today! Poppy's adoption fee is $450. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm and started on preventatives, and are given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
