ate towards her care at www.paypal.me/UOH Red Rose joins us from San Jose Animal Care CenterSan Jose Animal Advocates and Tails of a Shelter Vet Red Rose is a 1 yr old, 15 lb Pug and Yorkie Mix. She is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and free of parasites. She does have a kneecap on one side that moves around a little. She has been seen by two different vets who both said it does NOT require surgical correction (it is a Grade Two medially luxating patella). She does lift it up occasionally and her new owners need to know this and be okay with it. We do have x-rays available and they were normal and we are happy to EMAIL them to your vet if you want them to look at it before committing to her. She is a little on the shy side at first but is very sweet. Once she is comfortable she is a bit silly. She still very much has puppy-like behaviors and personality. She loves other dogs and seems okay with cats. We feel that she will be fine with respectful children. She is okay on the leash but could use practice. She probably will require some reinforcement on house training but she certainly has some basics down and has not had any accidents with us yet (we are VERY good managers of this though). She likes the car and is great in a crate. Unlike what all of the "doodle" breeders would like you to believe, just because a breed is mixed with a non-shedding breed (say a yorkie) does NOT mean that they are non-shedding or hypoallergenic. Red Rose here is a cross between a non-shedding Yorkie and a good-gravy-I-think-you-shed-more-than-any-dog-on-the-planet Pug. This makes her "normal shedding" and her fur is more terrier-like and wiry. We doubt that she is hypoallergenic. We expect that her breed mix will make her quite popular and so we will give preference to those emails who seem like they actually took the time to read what we wrote and reference it (we do it to help the adopter and not because our volunteer student interns are lacking for things to do. As it is, we do not let them sleep because there is a loophole where labor laws do not apply to volunteers!! j/k). We will also give preference to those who have a training plan in place (classes, self-taught, private trainer etc) because dogs who are shy benefit SO much from learning commands and being rewarded for performing them... it is SUCH a confidence boost for the dog and makes them more social and better pets. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
