adopted in 2021 and returned to us two years later in 2023 due to no fault of his own. We were heartbroken that Stewie experienced losing his family and home again. Now 12 years old, he weighs 16 lbs. Stewie is a volunteer favorite, and he has been on many outings, including to restaurants, parks, pumpkin patches, and the mall to meet Santa! He earns rave reviews for being fun, sweet, cuddly, and adventure-loving. Stewie also enjoys going on our weekly FFF hikes and is great on leash, calm in the car, and full of pep! Wondering what Stewie would be like in a home? We know! He has been on several two-week Frosted Flings, and his behavior in a home setting gets 5-stars, too! Here is the full report from one of Stewie's Flings: "Stewie is one of the most intelligent pups I have had the chance to meet. He is extremely smart, listens well, and learns fast. Stewie has a healthy appetite and eats as soon as his breakfast and dinner is placed out. No food aggression whatsoever. Plus, he is fully house-trained with no accidents or markings! Stewie is very mellow while inside the house. If you are up, and he is not napping, he will follow you from room to room and lay nearby you. He isn't an actual velcro dog because he doesn't get underfoot -- but he is most happy if he is lying in the same room as you. Most of the day, he sleeps. But if you want to play and initiate it with him, he perks up and gets after it. He loves playing tug-of-war and catch. He is very skilled at catching toys and treats mid-air and will run and jump to get any toy you throw his way. Stewie LOVES being outside, and although mellow, he seems to have boundless energy as soon as he hits the open air. He likes to jog and take long walks and has never struggled with hills or distance. Stewie hasn't shown any aggression toward any other animal while in our care. He walks great on a leash and doesn't pull or bark toward other dogs while passing. He gets really excited if he sees other dogs from the car and begins to excitedly whine because he wants to play and be outside. In terms of play, he tends to match the energy and interest of other dogs. He and my other dog would lay near one another but not interact much (my dog isn't playful), but when around more high-energy and active dogs, he would match their energy. Stewie is a lover of people and is very affectionate. He loves to give kisses and lay nearby. His favorite thing in the world is a big ol' belly rub. If you are on the couch, without fail, he will find you. Once found, he will sit straight up or paw at your hand until you scratch his belly. And then he will keep pawing at you until he feels he has had enough belly rubs. Ha! He is a funny and expressive little pup. He has big beautiful eyes that will track you and express his wants and needs. Stewie has been so affectionate and gentle toward everyone he meets. Stewie is the perfect gentleman and would make the most loving and fun companion to someone lucky!" 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
