ebruary 22, 2022. He is 9 years old, weighs 46 lbs., and is living with a foster family as part of the Molly & Me Project, a program to help loving and loyal dogs like Smitty that need to be the only pet in their home, find forever families. (You can learn more about this program at the link below.) Smitty has really blossomed in a home environment. His Foster Family shares: "Smitty knows many commands, including “Sit”, “Paw”, “Crate”, “Leave it”, “Stay”, and now “lay down”. He has learned to have a healthy relationship with his crate, and he will go in when asked with or without food and can stay in there until called with the crate open. Smitty loves getting fed in his crate in the mornings and in a snuffle mat in the evenings. He is a perfect gentleman with making eye contact and waiting for the "yes" command before he eats. He has never shown aggression with food. He knows to give the family space when we are eating at the table. He takes treats gently and does not beg. Smitty has loads of energy in the morning and before bed. He loves doing zoomies and bouncing and pouncing to play. He is easily calmed when we need him to relax by speaking softly and saying "easy". We frequent our walks later in the evening when we are less likely to see many other dogs. When we see larger dogs, we usually cross the street and have him sit out of view or turn around. With smaller dogs, we cross the street, and I call him and try to keep his interest. Most times he isn’t bothered by them. He loves car rides, and we take him to a Sniff Spot so he can zoom around and play fetch. Recently Smitty has been a bit of an escape artist while we were at work. He jumped on the patio table and over the fence. We now crate him while we are at work. We ensure we walk him more and extend our play time. He has not tried to escape the crate and seems content. When we will only be gone for an hour or two we leave him free range inside the house with the main doors closed. We are happy to report this new routine is working out great and he has had no change to his demeanor.” Smitty is a fan of cuddles! He is naturally drawn to women but will bond with men as well; it just takes a bit more time. He will choose a favorite person and will be a constant shadow to keep you company. He is a goofy and charismatic dog who loves to play. He is vocal in a quiet way when he plays – it’s the cutest thing ever! Smitty is so spunky and fun. He is full of energy and love and has so much to give a family!” If you are looking for an active and affectionate buddy, Smitty is your guy! His foster family has gotten him ready for a forever home... might it be with you? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
