r children. Special/Medical Needs: Allergies, arthritis Energy Level: Low Adoption Fee: $375 Foster Home Location: Calgary Hello, my name is KK also known as Kiki, I can't wait to be your lap dog. Being close to you is my favourite thing. I'm a little bit insecure and just like to know and be close to you as often as I can. I love affection and giving kisses. I am comfortable with small dogs closer to my size or smaller. I would like to play a little bit when they get more comfortable. However, bigger hyper dogs scare me. I get defensive and do not show my best side, a side that is very, very sweet and affectionate. You'll have to forgive my memory, I am not sure if I've met a cat or small children before. I do like a quiet and calm household so that we can enjoy each other's company and cuddle. I just love to sleep next to you or on your lap even if we're just hanging out watching TV. I also get cold very easily, so I love my sweaters. Loose fitting hoodies or cotton knitted feel the best. I have allergies, so I love my allergy shots. I have a wound on my cheek that gets quite itchy and also on my left elbow. My foster mommy has been putting anti-itch cream and Polysporin on both and it seems to help and is healing. Calgary weather is quite dry. My face and skin get itchy So a nice and very clean and dust free home is what is best for my needs. I can sneeze pretty hard and sometimes so hard that my nose hits the floor. So allergy medication and skin care would definitely on the top of list for making me the most comfortable in your home. I like to sleep under the covers being warm and touching you all night gives me a sense of security. You'll have to excuse me, I do snore a little bit too but not too loud. I'm a lady, remember. Calgary is quite a bit different from Texas and it's not as humid or warm here. So I often like to have heated blanket therapy. My foster mommy has been doing this twice a day in my bed under a towel. Warm water bottle feels nice too. Long naps are a big part of my day and sleep very soundly through the night, please don’t mind the snoring. With age comes arthritis, lumps and bumps. Some are just beauty marks. I have a couple that need to be checked on though, just to make sure that they are nothing serious. I recently had a biopsy done in my right armpit before I left Texas. That's all healed up and feels better. My foster mommy took the stitches out and after having a week of sponge baths...I'm okay with sensitive skin doggy wipes and very shallow water for my bath time. My ears get a little bit waxy and had built up from before but are much cleaner. I don't like getting them cleaned but will tolerate it because I know what's best for me. I can be a little bit fussy about my senior doggy kibble. I have older teeth. And they are little bit sensitive to very hard food. So I really like steamed veggies such as carrots, peas and sweet potato mixed in with my food and sometimes a little bit of canned salmon or tuna. Dehydrated duck, beef or chicken treats are my favourite. I've been trying out some bone and hip treats ground up and sprinkled in my food and I don't seem to mind it that way. My tummy and fur and skin are adjusting quite well too the new veggies in my diet. My eyes and coat have a new glow and sparkle to them. Morning big stretches and a quick massage all over my body and shoulders helps get the blood flowing and loosens me up. My hips and legs really appreciate this morning routine and throughout the day as well, whenever you can, it feels so good. My little tail just shows you how excited I am. It pops up and I wiggle my bum, rolling in poses you have never seen a doggie do. Showing off all of my fancy moves is my way of stretching. I know how silly I look and making you smile and giggle gets me going in the morning, seeing you happy makes me happy as well.. This is my way of showing you how much I appreciate it. I love, love, love it.. Taking care of business after doggie type yoga and massage is next on my to-do list. Getting my biggest pee and poop out of the way so that we can hang out and cuddle together. I'm a mature lady and really do like a routine oriented environment. I can go with the flow to your routine, but as long as we have one set, I think we will be perfect for each other. Car rides are not scary for me. I do like to be on your lap or beside on a blanket just so that I can be close to you. I don't mind being on a leash with a harness. I get very excited when the door opens and really want to get a head start on our walk, sometimes pulling hard to keep you on your toes. I just get so excited that we are going for a short walk. I do get sore quickly on our walks. Really do enjoy them very much and love sniffing and smelling everything around. Calgary smells so different and has different trees and is a little bit colder with the ice here and there. Being a Southern Belle from Texas, I am very curious about any and all things. Thank you so much for considering me to be a part of your home. My foster mommy just adores me and knows that with the right and caring home for all of my health and dietary needs, we could hopefully spend the rest of my days together. Love Kiki, KK, Kiki Coco Puffs Our rescue is called BARCS. We are a registered Charity. Our Website is .barcsrescue. All our animals are posted on the website and updated often. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
