and snooze. She is good about letting you know when she has to go out and can hold it through the night. She understands general commands such as “no”, “stay”, and “leave it” but will need further training to understand cooler tricks. Sugar requires a home with no other dogs, and seems to have a high prey drive for small animals. She does love to chase after bunnies and cats. She does not bark, unless extremely excited or in high prey drive situations. She does not bark inside the home. Sugar is comfortable in a home that is busy and has no issues with noises and people coming and going, and loves interacting with her human friends. Sugar has an issue with her back left leg and requires a home with minimal stairs. But her issues do not stop her from being energetic; she is disabled but not incapable. She does stay off furniture if you tell her “no” and only jumps and runs for toys. It is recommended that Sugar is in a home without young children as she can get fairly excited when playing. Sugar has been diagnosed with thrombocytopenia or low platelets in her blood. This is an entirely treatable condition, potentially caused by a reaction to vaccinations or a tick bite. The disorder is not expensive to treat and her prognosis is excellent. At the moment her blood levels are normal and she is maintained on a very low dose of steroids every other day The vet has cleared her for adoption with the understanding that she will need regular blood tests twice a year and may need to avoid future annual vaccinations and therefore will need to limit her interactions with other pets. There is the possibility thrombocytopenia will recur at some point, but again, it is a treatable condition. Sugar also has some knee arthritis. She is being treated with gabapentin pain medications and the foster reports some improvement in her mobility. She has lost over 20 lbs since arrival in Canada and keeping her weight maintained and adding a glucosamine supplement will continue to help manage her arthritis. She is currently 58 lbs (25.5 kg). Our rescue is called BARCS. We are a registered Charity. Our Website is .barcsrescue. All our animals are posted on the website and updated often. If you would like to proceed we need an adoption application to be filled out. They can be found on our website. Once we receive your application, we will contact you to arrange a meeting with the pup you are interested in. We look forward to hearing from you.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
