hold period, we scooped him up to become a Frosted Face on September 6, 2022. Glover is around 10 years old and weighs 21 lbs. He let us know upon arrival that he didn't like being his kennel or in the play yard. It was as if he was trying to tell us that he shouldn't be here, because he had a family and home to get back to! Sadly, no one came for him, and we worked to steadily to earn Glover's trust and to give him enriching activities and experiences. He loves going our weekly FFF hikes, and he has great leash manners, energy and stamina. Glover spent months being foster by FFF's founders, and it was in their home, he truly began to decompress and blossom into a member of a pack and family. Since the beginning of December 2023, Glover went to live in another Foster home, and we received an insightful update from his foster family: "We’ve learned quite a bit about Glover in the last few weeks. This is what we know Glover does not do well with any kind of change, moving a piece of furniture, adding a Christmas tree to the scene, having a guest/guests… He likes to see the same faces. He’ll greet a new guest with curiosity, but will then retreat. He either paces or hides in a safe spot and then pees multiple times in the house. Glover loves routine, he’d happily have the same day every day, he wants to walk the exact same walk every day, he knows meal time and treat time, sits in the kitchen waiting for his food and sits for a treat when I say “ good boy”. He feels most safe in our bedroom on his bed, and if there’s too much activity in the house or something different is happening, for example if we light the fireplace, he’ll go to his safe spot. We’ve taken him out in the car, and he seems to be okay actually riding in the car (he prefers the floor of the car), but he hates to get out anywhere new. He’s petrified of any type of shop or restaurant, even with all those delicious smells, all he wants to do is run for cover. When we get back home, he’s agitated for a while before he settles back down. He’ll happily sniff around in the backyard now he’s got used to it. Glover barks if anyone comes to the door, or is walking on the sidewalk outside. So, essentially, we’ve confirmed Glover is a dog, and a lovely dog at that! He wakes up soooo happy, wriggling and grunting. He loves attention from his humans, rolls on his back for pets. He knows his name and sits on command. Oh Glover, he is a lover for sure!" Glover has a patient and loving foster family, who is giving him time to feel safe, and celebrating small steps forward. Now, he just needs a forever family willing to do the same! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
