me a Frosted Face in January 2023, she immediately captured our hearts with her happy, loving personality At only 7 years old, Mella is a fun, friendly gal that is equal parts energetic walker and mellow napper; a loving soul that melts your heart with a smile, and a great snuggler too! She gives "high fives", fetches, and plays with squeaky toys. Mella was well-loved in her previous life and it shows! Mella has been living in a Foster home for several months, and we received a great report from her Foster Family: "Miss Mella Bella Boo is getting on well in our home! She gets the cutest zoomies in the morning before wanting a good cuddle. She eats part of her meals from her buster cube and figured it out very quickly! It does tucker her out so breaks are needed, but she has a lot of fun with it. She is VERY interested in whatever is going on in the kitchen and is a great sous chef. Mella gets along with our dog and enjoys going for walks with him. We walk either once or twice daily, and she enjoys the occasional hike. She loves meeting the neighbors almost as much as they love meeting her! She does not get very restless and is very calm around the house. She does enjoy her toys and small bursts of high energy play, but overall, she is a big napper. Mella is thriving with our family. We have left her and our dog home alone a handful of times for up to 6 hours, and she doesn’t display any anxiety. We have cameras up (at first to make sure things went smoothly. and now just so we can get our puppy fix when we’re missing them) and they just sleep on the couch together while we are out. Her resource guarding with our dog has greatly improved, and they can enjoy toys and treats near each other. They have even have played tug, and it is so fun to watch! We are working on waiting and practicing patience before eating or receiving a treats. As a result, Mella makes more eye contact while we are walking and training. Things Mella loves: - food or anything she thinks is food - laying on the cool concrete in the morning before getting a play session in with our dog - Lake Poway and duck watching - her big cozy bed - car rides!!! - giving kisses We are so happy and grateful to be sharing our home with this sweet old gal." Mella has a wonderful foster home but is still on the lookout for her forever home. Might it be with you? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
