16th to provide the medical care he needed. After Cooper had surgery to remove the dangling mass, he felt like a new man ready for his new life! He is 8 years old and weighs 67 lbs. Cooper is a very loving, gentle boy who knows SIT and SHAKE and how to catch treats. He enjoys going on our weekly FFF hikes and playing ball. He LOVES belly rubs and isn't shy about asking for them! If you sit next to Cooper, he might just decide to climb in your lap. He loves neck scratches and gives sweet kisses. Cuddle bug Cooper is a volunteer favorite at FFF, and he has been on many solo outings with volunteers, including to parks for picnics and walks, to Kahoots to shop for treats, to coffee shops, and a pumpkin patch! Cooper currently lives in a Foster home, and we received a great update from his foster mom: "Cooper is the best boy! He absolutely loves cuddling, especially if he gets to be little spoon. He also loves his walks and jogs, and is so so good around barking dogs - he doesn’t bark back and just keeps walking ahead. He does seem to love other dogs and want to play, which is super cute. Not to mention his little butt wiggle as he walks. When we first met Cooper at FFF, we thought he was going to be a low energy pup who just wanted his own space. To be honest, he seemed pretty depressed. Turns out he just needed a home environment to show his personality! He is the cutest dog! He has the excitement of a puppy, but the calmness of an older dog. It’s a perfect combination! He is such a happy boy who is full of life! Daily life with Cooper is really easy. I work from home, so he does have a lot of company. He doesn’t bark and is super low key when I’m working, which is perfect for me since I have a lot of meetings. He is always up for a walk or jog, but doesn’t have the puppy energy that demands constant walks. He is completely house and crate-trained, making it easy to leave him alone for a few hours when needed (although he definitely doesn’t want to be left alone). He absolutely loves people, and just needs a few minutes to warm up if his person is nearby. Having the stranger bring food and stand behind his person, in combination with giving him his safe space (his crate) has been perfect in our home. Our friends and neighbors keep commenting on how sweet he is! We host friends pretty frequently for dinners and game nights, and haven’t had any issues. The only thing Cooper does is bark at people when they approach me, which is just protective and hasn’t been followed by any aggressiveness. He just has a loud bark, which can prevent people from seeing how gentle he is. He responds really well to verbal positive feedback, and barking isn’t much of an issue now. As long as you say “No bark”, he’ll sit right down and stop. He gets very very happy when you then tell him how good of a boy he is for not barking. Cooper has been the perfect best friend and the sweetest pup for us. I can’t believe he hasn’t been adopted yet, but I know his forever family is going to be so lucky." 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
