vorced, and both moved to more affordable housing that did not allow dogs. We scooped her up to become a Frosted Face on September 11th. She is 10 years old, weighs 60 lbs., and is very sweet. Nicki’s family indicated that she lived with two young kids, she is house-trained, accustomed to living indoors, and was crate trained using the word “place.” The family indicated they would not choose to part with her if they were not getting divorced. SDHS volunteers figured out that Nicki was also taught to SIT and SHAKE in her previous home! Nicki Notebook went on a two-week Frosted Fling, and this is what her fling family told us about her: “Nicki Notebook has amazing manners. She never begs for food and she didn't even move when I accidentally left my breakfast unattended next to her! She has a good appetite and was great eating next to our dog - who she got along with so well! Nicki Notebook sleeps soundly through the night and does not move around a lot. She is also 100% house-trained! Nicki enjoyed brisk walking and hiking. We went on 45 minute to 1 hour walks every morning as well as shorter 15 minute walks through the neighborhood every afternoon. The rest of the day, Nicki was content to hang out around the house and enjoyed being wherever my Whippet was. Nicki met many people in the neighborhood and was friendly and accepted pets from all. Nicki enjoyed snuggling up on the couch with me when I watched TV. On our neighborhood walks, Nicki Notebook became familiar with the dogs she heard barking behind fences and her hackles no longer went up. Nicki needs slow and cautious introduction to other dogs. Nicki and my Whippet (who is also dog selective) got along fantastically. I was able to leave them alone together in the house after only 4 days. They were two peas in a pod and really enjoyed being together! Nicki Notebook was easy to bathe. She let me Dremel her toe nails and clean her ears. She loves to be covered with blankets when she sleeps. She slept either in bed with my daughter or on a dog bed in my room. Nicki Notebook loves to be close to her humans, but showed no separation anxiety when we left the house.” Nicki is currently on a second Frosted Fling, but she is still on the lookout for a forever home. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
