r. Shelby was with her mom since she was a puppy, and they enjoyed going for walks and doing everything together. Shelby has been dearly loved her entire life, and it shows in her super sweet and gentle personality. To ease Shelby's transition after losing her mom, she is living in a foster home. With some help from her foster mom, Shelby sent us this update: "I’ve been in my foster home for two months! My personality comes out more and more every week! I'm having such a good time, soaking in the love, and playing so much. My foster mom is constantly telling me how smart, funny, beautiful and sweet I am. I’ve taught her so much about myself: Smart ~ I learn everything so fast! I do something once and I got it! I’m blind and deaf. Yet I can map an area and immediately remember where everything is! I get around PHENOMENAL! I LOVE treat balls, puzzles, snuffle mat, etc. We use my kibble and I’ll play forever until I get all my food out! It’s such great exercise and stimulation, so I eat all my meals in some sort of fun game! I’m on a diet and I’ve lost a few pounds down to 23lbs! I LOVE to be up on furniture. I use a ramp for the couch and foster ma gives me a lift for the big bed at night. I’m potty trained!! Few walks a day and I’ll do my business outside like a good girl. I’m great on a leash! Foster ma calls it the Shelby shuffle, I’m no speed demon but I love to walk and explore! Good eater!! Not a fan of wet food but love my kibbles. Sleep through the night with my foster mom. I love to get in bed really early for snuggles and will sleep till you wake me, like 10+ hours! I love to cuddle and get belly rubs. I get along great with other dogs, and I'm cat approved! I'm good in the stroller and great in the car. We took a road trip to Big Bear and did so much driving around. I curled right up in my car seat and enjoyed being around my humans. I was excellent in the hotel room and well behaved for restaurants too. I'm quiet when I know a human is home, however, I get sad when my foster mom leaves. We are working on this." Shelby's foster mom shares: "Shelby is the sweetest, smartest, funniest little girl. She talks and grunts and grumbles to tell me all about things. She keeps me laughing all day! She’s so smart and constantly has me in awe of the things she figures out. Shelby is spunky, loves to explore and is an absolute pleasure to be around. Please consider becoming Shelby’s forever family!" 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
