very sweet and friendly, and if you’ve been looking for a silly, playful, shepherd mix, you’re in luck! Nanette is super silly, so fun, and lots of energy for playing and hiking. She does great in play groups with other dogs at FFF. Nanette earns raves from our volunteers that have taken her on solo outings to local parks and pumpkin patches. She rides nicely in the car, enjoys walking and sniffing, and has good leash manners. Nanette went on a two-week Frosted Fling with her play yard pal Frankie (see video.) Her Fling Mom reports: "If you are looking for an active, friendly, low-maintenance, lady-like guard dog, adopt Nannette! Shelter life has not broken her loyal spirit and she would love to protect your home and family. Please note, if you accept a new person into your home, so will she in a friendly manner. PERSONALITY 1. Obsessed with the great outdoors by physically being outside or watching from a window. 2. Great watch dog, but has not barked at the doorbell, only some passersby and delivery persons. 3. Many lady-like qualities. Walks, sleeps, and kisses in a very gentle manner. She appears "stand-offish," but don't let that appearance fool you. If you lean in for cuddles, you will be rewarded with gentle kisses. 4. Door dasher tendencies. We are working on this with extra barriers, firm "Stay" commands, and backing out the door. 5. Plays well with her playmate with tug of war and wrestling. 6. Not much into toys, but when I caught her nibbling on a pillow, it was easy to redirect her to nibble a toy instead. Nibbling is probably a self-soothing technique after a vigorous wrestling round with her playmate. She does love snuggling with her new Lamb Chops. 7. She does like chewing on a bone with marrow. 8. No separation anxiety issues (but, she is left alone with a playmate) and can be trusted to be left alone. 9. Likes face scratches, belly rubs, and cuddling on the floor. TRAVELING: 1. Great in the car. Loved being a co-pilot and sticking her head out the sunroof (if you have one.) Please only crack the window open 1-2 inches and belt her leash into backseat. 2. After pulling you for 1 block, while walking, she starts to walk at your pace. 3. If you're a less active pet owner, adopt a playmate (such as Frankie) with Nanette, and they will wear each other out daily with play and wrestling. POTTY HABITS 1. Housetrained (no potty accidents in the house.) 2. Eventually learned how to use the magnetic screen doggie door after a few tries. After 3 days of escorting her to the yard, I felt she was extremely secure (I have several fences and barriers) and gave her more freedom. She now goes to the door to be let out. She loves to go in and out as she pleases and has earned her independence. EATING 1. Great eater (may be a free grazer if she was an only pet.) 2. No medications required. 3. Does not beg for your food, but will patiently lie at your feet and appreciates your table scraps. 4. Never fights her playmate over food (or she is very tolerant when he eats her leftovers) and shares lickings plates together. JUMPING 1. She is a high-jumper (never on people). 3. She has not made any attempt to escape, but I bet she could if you provided a halfway springboard. See update under potty habits #2. 4. Will jump up to counter and table looking for food. GROOMING: 1. Does not appear to shed when petted. 2. Beautiful coat and skin. SLEEPING 1. Sleeps through the night and prefers the couch, dog bed in your room, or your bed." Nanette is back on-site and ready for her forever home! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
