around 8 years old and weighs 61 lbs. Isn't she beautiful? Delilah is so sweet, gentle, and smart! She knows “sit,” “shake,” and “down.” On our Thanksgiving hike, she was very well behaved with all dogs on the trail - curious but not excited, very calm. Delilah had the cutest prance! It almost looks like a horse trot. She walked at a moderate pace on level ground, fast going downhill, and slow going uphill. Delilah has well-managed diabetes, and she is an angel about getting her insulin injections. Please don't let this medical condition deter you from adopting this amazing girl! We will teach you all you need to know AND provide her medical care and insulin for the rest of Delilah's life. Delilah went on a two-week Frosted Fling, and we received a great report from her fling family: Delilah is such a lover. It's so sweet the way she places her head in your lap for pets. She's friendly to everyone she's met and will come right up to say Hi. She enjoys naps on the couch and sleeps well in a dog bed. While she does prefer being close to us she, also settles very well in the kennel no barking. We found she likes toys as well, playing tug with us or chewing a stuffy. Delilah is very curious on walks and must stop to smell just about everything. She is such an easy-going girl! She has already settled in with us in such a short time. After our fling, I am honestly shocked no one has scooped Delilah up, as she will be a perfect addition to anyone's home. She is totally unbothered by her injections, and if you test her glucose while she's napping she wont even get up. She didn't have a single accident in the two weeks she was with us, and she was respectful to all four dogs she was around. Delilah is all about people! She wants pets and cuddles with everyone and is not shy about asking for it. I've never met a dog that so instantly loved people. Whoever came through the door was her new best friend. It is impossible to not want this girl around once you spend some time with her." Delilah is currently on a second Fling to enjoy the holidays in a home, while she awaits her forever family. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
