le pittie mix who's looking for an active family of her own. She is 4 years old and around 45 pounds. Here's some info: HOUSE TRAINED she is one of the few fosters I've brought home who's never had an accident. Accidents are to be expected as they are typically nervous and don't know the new routine yet. CRATE TRAINED She actually loves her crate. She's quiet when in there, and goes in on her own at bedtime. I leave the crate door open, but she stays there till I call her name. SMART this little girl is super smart and food motivated so teaching her new things is easy LIKES THE RAIN no more dragging your dog down the street when it's raining. LOVES CAR RIDES in fact she loves them so much that she will dart to your car every time you two leave the house AFFECTIONATE super sweet and loving. She's a leaner, but not a velcro dog. You can actually go to a different room (except the kitchen) and she may or may not follow you PERFECT AGE at 4 yo, she is still high energy and playful, but can chill out as well. SMALLER SIZED at roughly 45 pounds, she's an awesome size. Not too big, not too small. WATCHES TV she watches TV quite often and if there's animals on, she will run up to the TV and bark. You'd be surprised at how many times you see animals on tv, lol DOESN'T CHEW ON STUFF she doesn't chew or play with anything that's not hers, with the exception of an occasional sock. She will grab one but doesn't chew it up SHY WITH STRANGERS she can sometimes be a little shy with new people so you need to do proper introductions. (typically having the person give her a treat and she's good) PROTECTIVE OF FAMILY who wouldn't want such a cute bodyguard BARKS AT NOISES OUTSIDE so she's definitely not a candidate for an attached home or apartment LOVES TAKING WALKS she loves being outside walking and smelling everything GREAT RUNNING BUDDY. we've only run a couple miles at a time but she's a good partner GOOD W OLDER KIDS per her previous family. DOESN'T LIKE OTHER DOGS she needs to be an only pet. This isn't a big deal for some people as they only want 1 dog. She's such a good dog, she's all you will need. LEASH REACTIVE she is quite leash reactive when she sees other dogs. This is something you can work with her on, and remember she's food motivated so that will help a lot. She also wants to chase every cat, squirrel and rabbit she sees. TOUCH SENSITIVITY she can be weird about her hind end and while putting on a harness. This is no big deal for me, there's things I don't like as well so I just avoid doing it to her. SCARED OF THUNDER she pants and paces Katana is a wonderful and easy foster that is so deserving of a wonderful forever home. She's not perfect, but pretty darn close. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
