ing and screening of applicants as a service, free of charge. All fees and adoption conditions are determined by the owner. We advise that adopters do not send payment or deposits for pets prior to adopting. ***** Cooper is a mixed-breed dog who is 6yo, weighs 45lbs, is neutered, is up to date on his vaccines, but is not microchipped. Cooper sits for treats, and knows 'come' and 'stay. He's initially nervous during car rides, but eventually calms down. He dislikes/fears the vet, baths, and nail trims. Cooper is somewhere between a couch potato and veryt active. He is happy to lay on the couch next to you but loves walks and play time. Cooper does have a sister who is also available for adoption; they could go together, as they are a bonded pair, or separately. Neither dog has had the opportunity to be around children so I cannot speak to that. Cooper is fine to be left at home for a couple of hours at a time, or even a short workday." Cooper's guardian explains why she has made the difficult decision to rehome him: "Living situation has changed with no one home all day to care for him." Lunge Incident: In May 2022, Cooper lunged at a family friend; the skin wasn't broken, no medical attention was needed, and animal control was not involved. Cooper's guardian explains: "Cooper has always been protective of my other dog (who is also available for adoption, Bailey, either together or separately). The friend was playing and petting and scratching Cooper when Bailey came up from behind and Cooper reacted to protect Bailey." Cooper's guardian offers a brief a medical history: Cooper had an ear infection only one time and it was treated and resolved. Cooper's guardian states the following regarding children: Cooper has lived only with older children, so his guardian recommends his living with older children, stating "Just not sure. In walks he gets very barky with people (especially children and other dogs)". Cooper's guardian states the following regarding dogs: Cooper lives with his bonded canine sibling, Bailey, but Cooper's guardian doesn't recommend his living with other dogs, stating "On walks becomes very barky. Never had the opportunity to play with other dogs". Cooper's guardian states the following regarding cats: Cooper hasn't lived with or otherwise been around cats, so his guardian doesn't recommend his living with cats. Cooper's guardian describes him as follows: Playful Affectionate Protective Indoor dog House-Trained Likes men Likes women Separation anxiety Cooper's guardian described his ideal future home: "In my opinion, the ideal family for Cooper would be a family with older children and those who have time to play and walk." 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
