fear and anxiety. He is not aggressive one bit-just overwhelmed by unfamiliar people, doorways, and new environments. Jackson will not become your dog overnight. He needs a calm, low-energy home and patient humans who understand that trust is built slowly and cannot be rushed. At Pets Return Home, our dogs live in a free-ranging pack structure. This setting benefits many dogs—but not Jackson. His fear makes him an easy target for more confident dogs, who often bully or push him, keeping him in a constant state of unease. His closest comfort comes from Star, another very sensitive dog who understands him. The two share a quiet friendship and often retreat together away from the pack’s social pressure. Jackson cannot thrive here with this level of stimulation. A quieter, more predictable home will give him the space he needs to finally feel safe and begin to grow. When Jackson trusts someone, his true heart shines through. He becomes affectionate, playful, and deeply loyal. He enjoys calm walks, chewing on his favorite bones, and peaceful one-on-one time with his person. His love is unwavering once he bonds. If you can offer Jackson patience, understanding, and a peaceful home, you will genuinely be saving his life. And we will support you throughout his transition and for as long as you and Jackson need us. He deserves a home where he can breathe, settle, and grow into the dog he was always meant to be. Adopting Jackson means committing to a process—but your patience will directly transform his future. Once he trusts you, his devotion is deep, gentle, and lifelong. Back Story Jackson came to us as a puppy with his mom and seven siblings after they were found in a desert den in December. Snow covered the ground when his mother, Isabelle, sought out help from nearby humans who brought the entire family to Pets Return Home. As the runt, Jackson was frequently bullied by his littermates and even by his mother. He was weaker and struggled to compete, and those early experiences shaped his fearful nature. He has been with us since 2022, growing slowly but steadily, and finding comfort in gentle dogs like Star who share his quiet temperament. Behavior Profile Jackson loves quiet moments, gentle interactions, and peaceful routines. He has good house manners, is crate-trained, and enjoys calm walks and relaxed one-on-one time. He forms deep bonds with the people he trusts and often gravitates toward other soft, sensitive dogs—like his friend Star—who helps him feel safe. Positive Attributes · Loves quiet moments and gentle affection · Has a sweet, soft friendship with Star · Enjoys calm dog companions · Great house manners · Crate-trained and leash-trained · Deeply loyal once bonded Behavior Challenges · Shy and hesitant at first · Needs a calm, predictable routine · Sensitive to noise and chaotic environments · Needs slow introductions and gentle handling · Feels safest in peaceful surroundings · A true project dog—but incredibly rewarding once trust forms If you cannot adopt right now, will you help by sponsoring monthly? You can help sanctuary, adoptable, in-treatment, and new-intake dogs by giving $10 or more each month. Your charitable support helps provide food, medications, veterinary care, training, and love our dogs need while they wait for a family, heal, or live in the sanctuary. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
