ay you can’t judge a book by its cover, and Woodstock seems to embody that in the most literal way. Not quite "pit" enough for some, and maybe a touch too much for others, he’s the kind of dog that forces you to question your own assumptions. Spend a little time with him, and you'll discover a heart that’s enormous, as deep and soulful as his eyes. He’s the soon-to-be favorite on your couch, not to mention your new go-to snuggle buddy. There’s a quiet determination in the way he’s eager to learn, mastering ‘sit’, ‘down’, and ‘speak’ as if proving a point. He approaches new people and pups with a gentle, almost cautious curiosity, as if assessing whether they’re worthy of his loyalty. But once you’re in, you’re in for life. Woodstock doesn’t just bring energy to a room; he brings a certain warmth, a comfort that only comes from a dog who’s seen the rough side of life and decided that love is the only way forward. Whether he’s engaging in a lively game of tug-of-war with his pals or acting as the gentle overseer for the younger ones (they’ve all taken to calling him Uncle Woody), he’s got that rare blend of playfulness and responsibility. When the day winds down, though, it’s all about the snuggles. He’ll curl up next to you on the couch, content with a chewie bone, a stuffed toy, and your presence. He’s not too keen on cats or loud kids, making him the ideal companion for someone looking for a quieter home. The truth is, Woodstock’s story is as big as his heart. Found alongside his brother Snoopy, abandoned and starving, it’s a wonder he’s come so far. Malnutrition left its mark on his left forepaw, but he doesn’t let that slow him down. He runs, plays, and lives with a kind of zest that’s nothing short of inspiring. His paw, slightly malformed from Rickets, may never fully correct, but it’s just a small part of a much larger, braver story. What Woodstock needs now is someone who sees not just his flaws but the journey he’s been on, someone who values the resilience and love he has to offer. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
