a Loving Forever Home! As Nora’s foster, it has been incredible to watch this beautiful soul thrive and learn to live her life to the fullest. Nora is a two-year-old Labrador with a heart as big as her journey. This sweet girl has already been through so much in her young life—she was found as a homeless mama, cared for her babies until they were all adopted, and then faced some tough circumstances that led her to a new foster home. Through it all, she has remained gentle, resilient, and full of love. Nora is shy at first, but once she feels safe, she blossoms into a loving and loyal companion. She just needs a little patience and a calm environment to help her come out of her shell. With time, soft words, and yummy treats, she’ll show you just how sweet and affectionate she truly is. Despite her initial shyness, Nora is a total goofball! She absolutely loves to play with her humans, but if they’re busy, she’ll happily entertain herself by pulling out her favorite toys and jumping around in silly joy. She especially loves Kong toys and bully sticks—her go-to favorites for fun and relaxation. We’ve invited a handful of guests over, and Nora did fantastic! She was curious, gentle, and even slowly approached them with a wagging tail. At first, Nora was unsure about leashes, but she is so eager to learn that today she goes on fun neighborhood walks! The moment she realizes she’s about to go outside, she bounces up and down like an adorable, fluffy tennis ball, smiling from ear to ear. She is very food-motivated and attentive, making her eager to learn basic commands. She would do best in a quiet home with patient adopters who understand that she needs time to feel safe. Another friendly dog could help her build confidence, but she’d also be happy as the only dog in the home. Nora is house-trained and is still discovering that the world isn’t such a scary place. She does very well staying home alone and will patiently wait for her humans to return. She is a gentle soul with so much love to give—she just needs the right family to see how wonderful she truly is. If you’re looking for a playful, sweet, gentle and grateful companion who just needs a little extra time to shine, Nora is your girl! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
