She’s fully potty trained, free roams the house, and spends much of her day perched on the back of the couch, quietly watching the world go by. She still gives the occasional bark at passersby, but she’s made huge progress with that, too. While her kennel is still available, she rarely uses it, and only for very short periods when necessary. Percy enjoys her toys, chews, and bones and understands what’s hers and what’s mine. She will carry my shoes into the living room but doesn’t chew them. Percy also loves blankets. She has several of her own and will pick one up, carry it to where she wants to lay, spin around until she’s covered up, and then lay down. It’s the cutest thing. Percy has made incredible progress on walks - we stick to a regular route, and she now ignores other fenced in dogs and will sit calmly when she spots a rabbit. Squirrels? Still working on that one! We also are able to redirect and go the other way when we see another dog walking. Since we don’t have a backyard, we go on several walks a day, plus enrichment games to keep her mentally stimulated. She occasionally gets time to run and explore in our neighbor’s fenced-in yard, which she absolutely loves. When she doesn’t get her energy out, Percy can play a bit rough, so she’d do best in a home with a fenced yard where she can safely run and sniff to her heart’s content. She’s gentle and cautious with the neighbor kids, but due to her occasional rambunctious play style, older, dog-savvy children are recommended. Percy is deeply loyal, incredibly trainable, and always by your side. She’s come such a long way and is ready for a forever home that will continue her journey with love, patience, and a little room to run. She’ll be your best little buddy. 12/9/23 Foster Feedback: Percy is my first foster and I’ve had her since mid-October. She did such a great job on the hour long car ride home and all rides since. As others have said, she knows sit, stay, lay down, shake, high five, and roll over. We’re working on drop, touch, and I’ve also noticed after walks in the wet grass or snow that if you tell her to wipe her feet when she walks in, she will go stand on the rug and sometimes spin around a couple times. Otherwise she will sit nicely on the rug until her harness is off. Percy is the greatest roommate and will make the perfect permanent addition to someone’s family. As I’ve gotten to know Percy I think she would do best in a household where she is the only pet and has a big yard to run and play fetch. Percy has loved any human that has come to our home, and walking by the neighbor kids outside doesn’t phase her. Percy does well in a kennel. I do keep her kenneled for a few hours in the morning while I’m at work. Otherwise I leave her out and she has free rein of the house and she does just fine. Percy has slept in her kennel overnight and doesn’t make a peep. She also sleeps in my bed and I barely know she’s there. Percy enjoys her squeaky toys. We found one that she can’t seem to destroy! She likes frozen Kongs and Pupsicles, as well as a nice tug-of-war competition, and tennis ball fetch. I also got her a few enrichment feeders/toys that she’s currently learning how to use. Percy will get the zoomies for a few minutes each night but is pretty relaxed and the cuddliest pup otherwise. We’re currently working on Percy’s leash walking. I’ve seen great improvement in the last two months as Percy isn’t as reactive to other animals and doesn’t pull nearly as much. It seems she will pull until she finds a spot to potty and then relaxes, so I’ve noticed if I keep her in my yard until she goes potty the walk is more enjoyable for all. She’s well on her way to being the best leash walker. Percy is a wonderful dog, very smart, extremely cute, and will make the best addition to a lucky individual or family! 9/6/23 Foster Feedback: Percy is doing well with training! She knows sit, stay, shake, touch, down, leave it and find it. She is very eager to please her people and learn new things and loves the snacks that go along with training sessions. She is still learning off (jumping up) and leash manners. Percy still has her puppy energy but has settled in well! She enjoys having structure and goes into her crate without any issues. She sleeps in her crate all night without any fuss. She has quite the personality! She loves running laps in the backyard with a toy and gets an occasional case of the zoomies! She enjoys as many walks as she can get! Percy really is a sweet girl and deserves a loving family she can grow old with! She likes following her humans around the house and doesn’t want to miss out on anything. She will snuggle up on your lap for as long as you let her. This girl is ready to show you her personality 7/5/23 Foster Feedback: Persephone loves people! Doesn’t want to miss out on what her humans are doing! The recent fireworks did not seem to phase her. She is highly entertained by toys and tennis balls and can typically entertain herself with them; however we do play fetch in the backyard a few times a day. Persephone likes to cuddle up beside us on the couch or in our laps. She knows her name and basic commands and is also house trained. She is crate trained and does very well in there. Goes to bed without making a noise! Percy is dog-reactive when on walks. She can be redirected with treats but will need continued training on this. A home with a fenced yard or active family for running around is recommended. 6/5/23 Foster Feedback: Persephone is a sweet and playful girl that loves to cuddle and play fetch as much as you'll allow! She would be best in a non-apartment environment, due to her still working on being a bit reactive to other dogs, and loving lots of space to move around and play. She is crate trained, potty trained, and is a turning into a great listener. Persephone would love a lively home that would give her lots of love and attention! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
