ll. I am so smart (not to brag but I am) and learn so quickly that I bet I'll have this off leash "with me" thing down pat in no time. I aim to please my people so being close by is important to me and what's closer than all of us inside a tent! And we'll have s'mores around the campfire and tell ghost stories. That sounds like a great life to me! Plus, I'm puppy perfection when I ride in the vehicle. I sit nice, watch out the window, and will have a grand time heading to places with my family. So, I'd be a good travel dog, camping pup, and hiking friend. What else? Hmmm I'm also a fabulous play partner for another dog while I live at Desert Haven so I'm sure I can transfer that to another dog in my new home. I like to play play play then sleep sleep sleep. Then when we wake up let's play some more! I'd also do great as an only dog as long as my family commits to giving me exercise and playtimes so I can burn my puppy energy in productive ways. Tug, chasing balls, walks, etc will do! I'm only 11 months old right now and full of excitement and eagerness. I have big energy and like to have firm boundaries from my people. I'm one of those real good boys who make their family super proud and listen very well when I know what I'm supposed to do. I don't get upset when you boss me; I don't want to be in charge I'm just a puppy! I like to be outside and I love water too! I could be a swimming dog! I could be a walking companion because I hold the distinction of being the dog at Desert Haven that pulls the least. Yep, that's right, I enjoy walking alongside my people. Then when the volunteer dog walkers sit down I often will sit right on the bench too for some petsies and some snuggles. I think what my family will enjoy about me the most is how much they love me, how often I make them smile, and how proud they will be of me. I am looking for a family that watches over me and guides me to be the best adult dog ever! And since I'm already 11 months old we better get started very soon! Is a goodest boy in your future? I'm here! It's me! Love, Twix

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
