hrough partner networks. Virtual meet n greets can be arranged for all non-local adopters. Chaz is a 1.5 y/o, apx 45-50 lbs, gorgeous boy who found himself timestamped for euthanasia in a small rural NC shelter due solely to space. Thankfully, a wonderful foster family stepped up so we were able to save him in the nick of time. Since then, we’ve heard nothing but how wonderful and incredibly special he is. Here’s what his foster mom has to say: “Chaz is a cuddle bug and his favorite spot to sleep is right in between my husband and I! On the other hand, he is also full of energy as to be expected for someone his young age. This boy LOVES playing with his bigger foster siblings! He also does great with cats, too! He doesn’t chase and has learned to respect their space. Chaz is crate trained and house trained. He knows how to sit and lay down for treats, and is currently working on learning different commands. He walks well on a leash but is strong (although shorter in size, he is very strong so some people might find him challenging to walk). Chaz will do best with other young playful, energetic fursiblings that match his play-style and energy level (older dogs, like our 2 seniors, find him to be too much). He will require someone that can take him on walks, play in the yard, and really needs to have a doggie sibling as he is really playful and gets lonely. We recommend older kids as he does get the zoomies and will easily knock them over. Overall, this great boy will make a wonderful addition to any family and we can’t wait to see him living his best life with the forever family that he deserves!” If you are interested in making this special guy a part of your family, please contact us! [ NOTE: Chaz is currently in foster in NC where he was saved. Interested families will be able to speak to his foster parents and meet him virtually over video; then transport will be arranged to Northern points for an approved/committed forever family!] ab To apply to adopt, click on .arcadiarescue/application. If the pet you applied for is no longer available, .arcadiarescue/adopt to see all of our available pets. Note: Some pups are in boarding facilities in order to save their lives. This is far from ideal, they really need to be in loving homes. Due to record number owner surrenders this year, we have zero foster homes available. Fostering helps save another pup from euthanasia in an overcrowded kill shelter needing to free up a kennel. If you can foster, go to .arcadiarescue/foster and fill out a foster application. Thank you!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
