FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Clovis and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (06/29) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Falls Church, (6100 - A Arlington Blvd, Falls Church, VA 22044)! Name: Clovis Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of November 2024 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 78 lbs Gets Along With: Clovis loves other dogs! Clovis should not live in a home with cats. We haven't seen him with kids but are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home About Clovis: This handsome boy arrived into our care in the summer of 2022 and was adopted out to a loving home. For more than two years, he enjoyed life with his humans. Through no fault of his own, he came back to us and now needs a new home after completing heartworm treatment. His previous humans say he's a sweet dog who responds well to commands. He enjoys his sniffy walks and romps in parks - he loves, loves, LOVES playing chase with other dogs! In the home, he's an awesome, chill buddy - his humans did not normally crate him but on the few occasions he needed to be crated, he simply slept. Generally, he loves quieter environments - and like many of us, would choose a nice leafy suburb and a hike through the woods over a high rise in the middle of the city. What My Foster Says About Me: Clovis is a gentle and fun boy who loves to cuddle as hard as he plays at the dog park. Clovis is amazing in the house and loves to go on sniffy-walks in quiet areas, play with toys and play chase at the dog park. After a good romp, he will cuddle and keep you company wherever you are. Medical: Clovis was heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. He has completed the treatment and activity restriction phase, and is awaiting his 6-month follow up test. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
