R NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Arthur Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and lab mix Best Guess for Age: 1.5 years as of April 2025 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 55 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with kids or cats, but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters. Currently Living at: Texas shelter - needs a human to make an offer to get up to the DC area! Arthur is Looking For: His forever family! As young puppies, he and his sister Charlene, along with their mama Coopa, landed in a shelter so far south in Texas, it's only 30 miles from the Mexican border - and the shelter routinely has 1200+ animals in its care. Despite having such an enormous number to care for, shelter staff do an amazing job with all their dogs and Arthur is a great, loving dog and wonderful in playgroup with other dogs - he has been so well socialized with other dogs! Unfortunately, there is a massively skewed ratio of available homes to dogs in the area - so his only hope of getting a home is out of state. He is not bonded with Charlene and they will go to separate homes. Arthur is truly such a big ol' sweetie who loves life and wants nothing more than to know who his humans are, where he belongs. He has all that awesome young-dog energy and is ready to accompany his humans on all those adventures - sniffy walks around the neighborhood, romps in parks, and trips to the beach - the mountains - Starbucks for pup cups - he's up for it all. Making new pup and people pals along the way would be terrific too. He's gonna be an amazing companion. What do you say? Will he be yours? What My Foster Says About Me: We will update this if he gets a foster and is able to come to the DC area. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog . Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. That said, we cannot make any guarantees about age, breed or temperament. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
